Description Show: Steven Demayo
Episode(s): 111-112
Year: 2016

Writer(s): Raven Molisee, Paul Villeco, Hilary Florido, Lauren Zuke

I'm just going to get right to it: they got Dave Willis, the voice of Carl Brutananadilewski and Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, to voice Andy DeMayo! I literally couldn't stop laughing the entire time from the moment he showed up, just because I couldn't stop thinking of Carl whenever Andy opened his mouth! But seriously, Andy is probably one of the best guest characters in the show because we get a more in-depth look at the rarely discussed human side of Steven's family tree. I mean, the guy has a WWI-era biplane and travels the world; how friggin' cool is that!?

This episode really gives us a good look at what Steven's human family was like before Greg left for Beach City and became Mr. Universe, and I just want to say: I fucking called it on "Universe" not being Greg's real last name! I love how this show takes inspiration from its staff, hence the last name DeMayo coming from one of the animation directors, Nick Demayo. What makes Andy really stand out is that at first glance, he's the stereotype of an uptight conservative, or what people see Donald Trump supporters as... Come on, it was too friggin' easy! Can you NOT picture Andy wearing a hat that says "Make America Great Again" to go with some of the crap he says? Calls the Gems "illegal aliens" (even though they really are), and that Greg "couldn't even marry an American". But really, Andy is more of a traditionalist when it comes to family; even more so than someone like Applejack of MLP: Friendship Is Magic, and in a far more realistic sense.

And before you ask, no, we don't get anything like flashbacks from before Steven was born, but the stories Andy tells about the old days to give it a more realistic feel. We all have that one family member whose extremely stubborn and refuses to adapt with the times in one way or another, and Andy is this way with the very idea of "hippie Martians" being apart of his family and what he thinks is Greg backing out in the old gang. But what keeps Andy likable is that he's got his reasons for being stuck-up and having such a short fuse: he is a true family man who can't deal with separation, but makes the effort to come to terms with the changes he's presented.

A lot of people rag on this episode for it "supposedly" trying to teach people to accept racists and bigots, but that's not what the episode was going for at all. Andy isn't a racist, and is only prejudice at first before getting all the information. Really though, how would you react if you found out that "HOBOS BROKE INTO DA BARN!"? I think what this episode is going for is the idea that given the right amount of time, patience and love anybody can adapt to change and become better people because of it. And again, Andy is voiced by Dave Willis, so it's really hard to take anything he says seriously!

With Andy out of the way, I can talk about the other stuff I liked here. Since this episode takes place in mid-autumn, we get some nice hues of orange and brown juxtaposed with the usual tropical seaside greens and blues of Beach City; this compliments the farm setting especially well to give us some lush variety to the scenery. And I got to love seeing Lapis and Peridot finally get their own baby with Pumpkin! What better thing to teach your first baby then how to swear? Remember, kids, it's spelled C-L-O-D, CLOD! Of course, the first few minutes were kind of cringey with Steven mutilating a pumpkin in front of one that's alive, so that was kind of disturbing, but not enough to hurt the episode.

What really separates this episode from many other Thanksgiving episodes is that in the world of Steven Universe, holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving don't exist! This is obviously to get rid of any religious connotations tied to them in a world where aliens exist, but it's a neat perspective to see how these characters adapt during these times of year without commercialized holidays, and Thanksgiving really gets the shaft these days because of Christmas and Black Friday, just like Halloween. So it's nice to see a lot of our favorite characters get together for a nice meal and meet someone entirely new.

On a final note, does anyone else realize Andy and Marty look surprisingly alike? Could Marty be related to Andy and therefore Greg as well? So that would mean Steven and Sour Cream are also related, wouldn't it? Also, I loved seeing the Gems just try their damnest to relate to Andy and throw a party with everything you could imagine in the human lifespan. Why don't we all marry each other!?

1-the only racist I see is peridot(again she refused pearls help and input knowing they were on a fixed time limit with dealing the cluster and all)
2-can you actually believe Greg and rose weren't actually married(I'm 25% not suprised)
3-would it be racist to assume Gregs side of the family is Italian or something?

Rebecca Sugar created a character that represents everything millennials hate, and she makes you sympathize with him.

I fixed a few errors in your review summary, so do the same thing as always:

Carl’s just mad here that Willie ripped his arms off the last time they met. (I still can’t get over that fact though. it’s so weird, yet so funny that Tom Scharping played both of them!)

Why not make fun of Hillary supporters for a change?
They actually rioted and filmed themselves throwing tantrums and smashing TVs.
Hell, I've seen one filming himself picking his nose and eating a booger.

Thanksgiving was founded by Protestants who came to America because King James was a tyrant.
Halloween is the day that Christians lament the dead before praying for them all day the next day.

Born and raised Catholic, I know my stuff.
