In the days of crowdfunded video games you usually have those that go way overbudget, cancel altogether, insult the people who funded them or churn out literal garbage! The indie scene of the 2010s has been a MASSIVE double-edged sword for gaming; bringing us treasures like Shovel Knight, Cave Story and Bastion. It also gave us garbage like Mighty Number 9 and Yooka-Laylee that desperately tried to cash in on nostalgia without knowing why the original sources worked. Cuphead felt like a miracle even among these games in that it’s theme represented how it was developed on almost a complete gamble.

Brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer sold their houses to fund this game! Risking everything they had in the hopes this game would succeed, and within two weeks this game sold a million copies! Friends, family and major gambles helped these two brothers create what might be one of the greatest indie games ever made! For years I’d hoped the astetic of 1930s cartoons could be used to make an awesome game; but none before this one had gone far enough! This my friends scratches the itch of all who love the Golden Age of Animation!

Before Cuphead there’s only one other game that I can recall being completely hand-drawn: Wario-Land Shake It! That game in and if itself is really beautiful; given it was animated by legendary anime studio I.G. that’s as obvious as the nose on your face. But this? Is on a whole other level! Inspired by games like Contra and Gunstar Heroes it revives the Run n Gun genre with gusto, all sorts of power-ups to wipe out your enemies from three-was projectiles, charge shot and even STANDO POWAH! But make no mistake... this game can be a BITCH to everyone who isn’t wise!

Calling Cuphead the “Dark Souls of Platformers” is a frankly ludicrous statement. Soulsborne Games rely on a fake difficulty level that serves to belittle and crush the spirits of players who hate themselves and wanna break their systems! I just... I REALLY fucking hate Soulsborne games... unlike Battle Toads that’s built on fun coulpled with its difficulty, these games are just hard for their own sake... it’s disgusting. Cuphead is nothing like Dark Souls in that it has easily decipherable patterns that may throw even the most careful of players for a loop if they aren’t perfect with their timing; but like 1930s cartoons what might seem like a breeze can get crazy real fast!

How the bosses were designed based on their locations and functionality is reminiscent of how the general rule for designing Pokémon works; I greatly admire that. From the simple yet tricky bosses like Goopy Lee Grande to the outlandishly hard such as Grim Matchstick. It benefits from having a structure like Mega Man where you get to choose how you progress through the game. If one boss is killing you too many times just do another until you’re ready. That said if you don’t beat Grim Matchstick as soon as possible you’re gonna have a bad time.

Actually I’ll be honest with all of you, I cheated to beat the game the first time. I couldn’t do it any other way! I beat the fucking devil with glitches! I wish they didn’t patch those out... yeah if this game has one problem, due to its production it’s the lack of content. Beyond everything that was cut and such, it’s a relatively small game like it’s inspirations. Those glitches really helped liven up a game that can really... destroy your soul... hey unlike Dark Souls this game at least LOOKS APPEALING!

Another thing I respect that helped it stand out was making the plot rather ambiguous. Are the debtors really bad guys? Given they’re also fighting to protect their souls from deals they made with the Devil you kinda have to pity some of them... even THE DEVIL HIMSELF could be argued as a necessary evil having you hunt these people down for welching on their deals. And thanks to Cuphead and Mugman they’re all basically Karma Houdini’s because of them. Given the time period this game is inspired from its morality regarding gambling and welching on deals is very... confused... to say the least. But that goes hand in hand with how protagonists in these really old cartoons didn’t need to be 100% in the right.

One last thing I respect is it’s availability. Being it can be okayed in even the CHEAPEST of PCs there’s no excuse not to buy this game for Steam or what have you. Being locked at 24 FPS like those old cartoons really does benefit it in more than looks... there’s no excuse to not try out this game at least once! With the Delicious Last Course (DLC) coming next year I’m more eager than ever to get back into this beauty of a game! 23 Skidoo, bitch!

I really need to finish this game. I've been stuck on King Dice for a while now.

When I first saw footage of this I didn't even realize it was a video game. It mimic the look of classic animation that well.

It does nothing to add to the genre it pays tribute to, seems to control worse than Banjo, dialogue can’t be skipped or awkwardly cuts out when you do,  didn’t need that much money.

Not to mention that levels are not so creative and the villains are not interesting like Gruntilda and Klungo. Seriously, a bee version of Gru from Despicable me series and his assistant is a duck head in a jar ?

His design, his voice, the fact that he’s active throughout the game unlike Grunty. He’s got some charm to him. The duck I don’t care for. And I actually think Yooka and Laylee the sleeves are pretty nice.

So, the story, the levels, the boss fights and the controls are the only flaws of this game ?
