Thanks Angel, it's fun to 'let loose' and just paint sometimes

Love the industrial look, and the colors add to it. Nice work.

Just try it man, it doesn't have to be the Mona Lisa I was just browsing thru those guys work, and I said to myself, I'm gonna paint something - and it ended up pretty good. If you have time, and you feel the urge, just sit down and start scribbling

Check this guys stuff out [link] really amazing, but i think what i like best is that he shares his beginning sketches so you can see where he starts, like [link] and [link]

Someone told me once 'It doesn't have to be perfect, just draw it'

Yes, indeed. I have a hard time doing that though...

Just sit down and start scribbling, yeah the first ones might be terrible, but you'll get better

I just get so frustrated when I try. Mainly with humans. Like, really frustrated sometimes. There were a few times where I started sweating from all the anxiety. I can draw more abstract things, but humans are just so hard to do. I guess it's because humans are so used to how we look, so that we notice the slightest flaws. I guess it's just something I gotta get over if I wanna get any better. I know how I would practice, it's just hard to bring myself to do it. That's usually the problem with a lot of things I do. I know how to do them, I just have a hard time actually doing it.

Then practice with other things, not people (they're definitely not easy ) I personally am a big fan of landscape art. What i do is just study the art i like, and try and figure out how they did it, there's lots of video tutorials on youtube, try experimenting with different brush sets, follow regular tutorials .... here's a guy who i've learned a lot from just by following his tutorials and playing with his brushes [link]

I think one thing that would help is to try and eliminate any standards for how I want the picture to look like. That way, I won't get anxious over the flaws in my drawings (someone on dA told me that). But yeah, experimentation is always good when you practice.

That's good advice, I did sort of the same thing when i started speedpainting. I feel like i have high standards for my 'finished' space artwork, and so i had to tell myself when i sat down to paint the first several times "I don't care if this sucks, just paint it!" .... Because everyone has to start somewhere, right? It's fun sometimes to look back through someone's gallery to see how far they've come

Netufi In reply to Regulus36 [2011-05-22 17:54:16 +0000 UTC]

lol yeah, I need to do that more... I know I've made progress in the quality of my artwork, but I still haven't improved a whole lot with drawing people. I can colour and shade good, but I can't get the drawing itself right (hence why I like to colour other people's linearts).

I was gonna find you some tutorials, but it's late and I've been at work all day but, dude, seriously look on the web - there's a lot of websites that will teach you to draw people. You know what you might try: is just getting a pencil and a sketchbook and drawing in it... practice people, animals, whatever. Sketchbooks are really helpful I've been keeping them for years

Netufi In reply to Regulus36 [2011-05-28 06:00:10 +0000 UTC]

True that... I would get a sketch book if I had the money. I'm not sure how much they generally are though. Maybe I can savage some money to get one. That would be nice though.

I like these [link] they're not very much $, but they're pretty nice quality ... and if you see the book that's listed as 'other people bought this too' [link] it's one I like a lot too funny coincidence!

I don't even know who they are so I can't compare anyway all I know is the thought of drawing advanced machinery scares me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Regulus36 In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-13 02:12:20 +0000 UTC]

They're both concept artists [link] and [link] crazy talented guys! I'm definitely not great with machinery but I found some brushes that help try [link] and [link] you still have to figure out how to work with them, but they make adding details a lot easier

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Regulus36 [2011-05-13 02:50:30 +0000 UTC]

Ah, those are good, especially the latter one (I must admit I even like refined details even in "just" concept art ) I've seena lot of brushes online too, but I admit pride gets in the way, and since I don't like sharing the glory, I prefer to use my own brushes I got started making all these miscellaneous sci-fi like shapes in black and white, like industrial types patterns, steel girders, lights etc to be turned into brushes eventually to hopefully make the idea of drawing buildings and machines less painful . Did the same thing recently when I made around 70 tree, leaf and plant related brushes and then tried them out (didn't get uploaded here though) and it was worth the work when I realized I painted a realistic, detailed tree in about 5 minutes hopefully I'll have as much luck with the sci-fi ones when I'm done with them, but machines and buildings do require much more care than trees and stuff

Regulus36 In reply to Chromattix [2011-05-13 18:08:55 +0000 UTC]

I know where you're coming from, I'd always rather use my own brushes than someone elses. I've been thinking about making my own brushes for painting, but i think i need more practice first - I have a feeling whatever digi painting brushes I make now would be useless when I really start to get better so for the moment it's practice, practice, practice

BTW The majority of this was painted with the oil brushes, they're standard in PS I think, only the vegetation, the distant alien building and a couple of other little things were painted with other brushes
