I gotta say Angeal had a lot more detail than I had first anticipated. I kept having to look things up and figure out how to layer so many different blacks in such small spaces.

You know already that one of the things I like best about your paintings of male characters is that they look like men and not like boys or even girlish.

I lucked out that the character was designed buff, so no risks of him being girly. I just had to make sure the face was right.
The detail nearly killed me on this one! I had to keep looking references up and considering the character is not super popular my sources were limited. To make matters worse there were so many blacks of different textures and hues. It made me want to cry

Yes, I believe that this can be Hellish. Where do you get your references? Because the stock images here at dA are somewhat limited. Well, the reference for my latest try I googled and obviously other people here are doing the same.
I might be a beginner, but I know that feeling. That fun character for a guy and the "Wild Elf" almost killed me.

There are dozens of stock sites on the web, and I have my personal collection I have built up over the years. I often will spend hours a day simply looking for refs, and have purchased many many books and CD to also use. DA is actually a very new source for me to tap into and still used mostly as a secondary source.
Yep, his name is Angeal Hewely and he only has one wing on the right side. So calling him an angel is also a play off his own name. lol I make corny jokes...

The only advantage of the stock here is that it is completely free and you can be sure that there won't be any legal issues. While I don't use the pictures for manips and only need them for anatomy, poses, facial features ... I am still somewhat reluctant to use a picture found with google. In the stock images here I often don't find the pose I need. I also want a model of similar build than what I want to draw. *justmeina and `jademacalla are good models for Tarno, but, maybe, I want to draw other stuff, too? Sometimes the resolution is low, the picture is too dark, the clothes are not what I need and hiding the joints ... bleh.

That is why I explore other stock sites, and join groups that send samples out for free. However it is common you will find the right pose but the wrong body or face. This is where you learn to mentally combine them together to compose one piece. I can use up to 20 refs for one image. In fact this painting had around 10 refs I looked at to get everything plus a fair bit of just experimenting. It is rare for everything to be in one image. It just takes practice, you'll get the hang of it.
He never did fly away, and scarified himself to save his pupil. Who would follow his mentors example and die a similar death, but that death would bring the birth of the worlds greatest hero.

Once I had a list with links. There weren't that many free images, but it was better than nothing. Right now I can't look at more than two opened windows at once or I won't see anything.

Nah, in this case I scored with a ref of the actual pose I wanted. I had to do some major hunting to find it though. I then modified the body, clothes, and drew up a few refs for heads (although mostly just eye balled the official version and painted from there). The wing was the biggest pain and the background is a rather standard operation for me.
Oh antiheroes are a personal favorite of mine. Especially those with a sense of humor.
