CHAPTER II - Clockwork Coda

Gentle breeze blew to the spacious room, the warm air of a summer spurred in. Despite so, the room felt cramped, so restricting and suffocating. As usual, the auburn haired lady sat on her bed with books and dictionaries sprawled over the white bed sheet. She toyed with her food, an unamused look on her face. “Ada, eat your dinner properly.” Her younger sister scolded from the corner of the room as she flipped through a book with terribly dusty cover. Language of Flowers? Hasn’t she finished it yet? Too slow. Ada sighed and chomped the cherry tomatoes whole, causing red juices to stain her mouth.

She chewed idly while a certain scene she accidentally saw from last night played in her mind. “You know… there’s this rumor the hags outside babbled. That people are getting messages in bottles, an invitation to Ehurst. You know what Ehurst is right, Kara?” The mention of Ehurst piqued Kara’s interest. She closed her book, walked to the bed and used a napkin to wipe the stains on her sister’s mouth. “I know. I got one yesterday, threw it to the junk already. What about it ?” She answered indifferently. “YOU WHAT ??-“Ada raised her voice and slapped Kara’s hand aside. Hastily making her way to the workroom, the IV on her arm was forcefully disconnected. Her hunch was correct; it was what exactly as she thought. The ticket to utopia, to the freedom she never got a taste of, exactly right under her nose.

Kara ran after Ada and stared at her with a puzzled look. Ada had her antics but it was the first time Kara saw her with such enthusiasm, digging through the pile of junks in the basket no less. As Ada got to the bottom of the pile, she frowned, not finding the thing she was looking for. “ You fool, how could you throw it away just like that ?!?” she yelled in vexation.

“What else could’ve I done about it ? It’s most definitely a child’s play, Ada !” Kara exclaimed in reply, feeling lost on why her sister looked so despaired over a single message-in-a-bottle prank. “What makes you so sure that it was a child’s play ? ….Tch, boring.” Ada threw an upset expression at Kara as she turned her back on the younger lady. Think, where could’ve the bottle ended up in at this point ? She furrowed her brows, digging into the depth of her knowledge.

Ada’s words seemed to hit Kara worse than one might think it would. Boring. All these time Kara had looked up on her sister, who stood out in every sense. Her whims, her ideas, her quirkiness. Ada was the one she envied ever since they were childrens. “ ....Well. I’m sorry for being a bore. But what ? Do you expect me to just run off, with such vague words as my lead ? Leaving Mutti and Vatti working by themselves ? Leaving you behind ?!? You know I cant !” Kara lashed out, her voice slightly trembling with frustration.

Ada glanced at Kara, noticing the word she used. Can’t ? What was she implying ? She turned to face her younger sister, her eyes looked visibly hurt, yet she smiled and clasped her hands together, “Well, then~ Thank you for your care, dear sister. From now on please live your life to your fullest, I shall no longer be your burden.“ With a light wave, she left the house.

Kara fell to the wooden floor, she was surprised that she herself yelled like that. A burden ? Ada seemed to take misunderstood her words. It's true, she cant possibly leave. But not because she felt chained, rather she greatly loved this place. The thoughts of the faraway utopia was distant to her, and in that sense, Ada's word made sense. She was dull. Alas, it's too late. The gears have been set in motion, what lies beyond for the two sisters is for fate to decide....
