CHAPTER I - Clockwork Prelude

It was getting late, the neighbouring shops are closing and the pub's candles has been lit, emitting a soft warm light from across the street. Inside a quaint shop with dusty window, a young lady was also preparing to end the business for the day. But then suddenly the front bell rang and the door was opened, a customer hurriedly came inside.

"Good evening, Katrina dear ! Thought you're closed already, glad I made it in time. Is your father in ?? I have this trinket to fix", the man said as he laid a broken crossbow on the counter. " My boy accidentaly knocked it off yesterday. It's ornamental, but still I prefer to keep it in prime condition." Kara studied the object with interest. She nodded, a bright smile on her face as she completed a mental blueprint of the crossbow. "Vatti's still working on that steam locomotive project of his, so I'm afraid he's quite busy. But I can fix it for you sir ! I understand that much." .

The man left some money on the counter as he smiled with satisfaction and left. Right after, Kara noticed a bizzare clock sitting next to the crossbow on the counter. She immediately picked it up and ran after the man.She was nearly out of breath when she caught up."Sir, you left this-", Kara said as she handed him the clock. The man looked at her with puzzled expression, "Sorry dear that's not mine. Perhaps other customer's ?" And so, beneath the darkening sky, the young lady was left with the riddle. She was sure the clock wasn't on the counter before, who on earth put it there without being noticed by the two in the room ?

As the man left, Kara returned and carefully brought the clock together with the customer's crossbow to the workroom. She put it on the tall wooden shelf, full with broken mechanical objects. She marveled at the sight of things to fix. 'So many puzzles to solve, so little time', Kara thought to herself as she picked the clock up to take a better look. She actually love her job, but she has been doing this for as long as she can remember. There are simply times where she just wanted to daydream and pamper herself like other girls her age did. She stares absently while running her hand on the rusty metal finish of the clock, closely examining the dust piling on the needles. 'It must've stopped ticking for a while now.' Kara continued to trail her hand to the small glass chamber underneath. It was missing its pendulum, instead a glass bottle was resting in it. She curiously took it out and brought it to her work table. Underneath the dim light she pulled out a piece of parchment inside

'Invitation to Ehurst' it said. The words rang familiarly in her memory. It sounds like one of her sister's folklore. Yeah, indeed, Ehurst. She remembered now. It was the mythical flying island with abundant magic and greenery. Something that she definitely cant imagine, living beneath towering factories and bustling town streets. She chuckled, 'What a cruel joke.' The thought of her sickly elder sister surfaced, also the images of how hard it has been for her parents to work and cope with her medical conditions. They were all dragging past their limits.

This reality, bitter as it might sound, is what she has at the moment, she's not going to sacrifice it for some pipe dream. She tossed the bottle and it's content away. "I can do this much", she said cheering herself up as she reached to one of her piling jobs and began to work in a steady rhythm.
