Hmm, the ring mail and kite shields suggest early medieval (900-1200), while the helmets and the axeman in front have an eastern look. That, and the whole scene is very reminiscent of the Battle on the Ice from Alexander Nevsky (a definite plus). So, are they Varangians? Rus? Bulgar?

Is it just me, or do the helmets of the guy in red with the bearded axe and of the fourth guy from the left look a bit middle eastern?

just awsome great work. all thumbs up.
but one thing, the german word winterreise is written only with one s except you want to make an allusion to the german word "reiΓen" or reissen which means to rip.
