Description One in a series of intimate and psychological nude portraits.

[DISCLAIMER: A lot of people have commented on how the model is "masturbating" in this painting. Stop for one moment and question why it is that a hand placed near or on the crotch area automatically denotes masturbation. In actuality the model was covering herself up because she did not wish to flash her vagina to the entire world. It was an act of modesty. Quite the opposite from the fantasy many people have created on their own. Ever hear the phrase "A picture is worth a thousand words?" There is always more to an image than what is seemingly going on at first glance. My work is squarely footed in this idea. If any of my images offends or seems to break any of your social or moral values you can either choose to move on or take a moment to think and understand what is really going on both in my work and in your head.]

UPDATE: A Note on Medium
- The painting is watercolor and gouache on Arches 260 lbs. cold-press watercolor paper.
- The painting is entirely rendered in watercolor with the gouache being used for the graffiti on the left side wall and small details on the window just above the girl.
- It measures 40 x 26 inches.
- I did not use any type masking or frisket for the painting.

When saw this at first I was mesmerized by the scene. All the detail and how the light is working its way into the room and on the model. Then I read your caption and understood it is a painting... wow! Looking longer and longer I see more clearly, but I'm blown away by the this one! Excellent!

The amazing thing is: The original White canvas got totally tranformed into very intense light , i almost can feel it warm my skin and burn my eyes , including the first light bounces. A++mazing

Hi otaku3d , sorry for taking so long to reply. Thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad that intense, blinding light comes across. I've always been fascinated with light and this piece was a testament to my desire to "get it right."

Great that interest or compliments to your work still make you smile ! Unfortunately a lot of the very good/ giftet people become jaded and start to take all the enthusiasm which is given to their stuff as a of course. (Well....there are even guys which are incredible haughty WITHOUT beeing particularly "gifted", aren't they )Β  Long story short: I appreciate your nice reaction

Ha! Well, I suppose that is true but I try to stay humble - art is a personal challenge for me, not something to be taken for granted, so I'm always flatter end when someone takes the time to tell me what they think of the work. I'm also well aware of the flippant and disposable nature of images on the internet so any effort by my audience to react to any of my work is appreciated.Β

this painting is ridiculously amazing, please tell me that you use references because if you didn't that might just be too much to take. the work is superb, the key to a successful painting is the lighting, get that right and you are golden. i am still working on that.

reubennegron In reply to IrisRevolver [2013-07-09 14:54:22 +0000 UTC]

lol, yes, I used reference for sure. Although I might have been able to do it without the reference it might have looked very different had I not. And I 100% agree with you about lighting... It's so incredible important and yet often overlooked. I obsess about the lighting when I compose a painting.

IrisRevolver In reply to reubennegron [2013-07-09 21:01:15 +0000 UTC]

I need to focus more on designing good lighting, right now I spend too long on composition ie characters, inanimate objects, not realising that lighting is a crucial part of composition. I compliment others on their good work on it but do not utilize it enough to tell a story.

good work man

Staging your characters and objects is also very important - and don't get yourself down - I took a look at your work and you know what you're doing.

I absolutely love your caption lol! I'm glad I stumbled onto your work its so interesting! I wish I could enter your mind, what was the inspiration for this piece? did you design this set by the way? and I really dont understand how you achieved this with watercolor, wonderful!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reubennegron In reply to clvire [2013-03-21 21:18:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh thank you for the kind comment! I did not design any of the settings for this body of work (This House of Glass). I interviewed people who volunteered to be my models and then painted them in their homes. This is what her room looked like at that time (she has since moved). As far as my motivation - I'm interested in knowing what makes people tick. I like getting into people's psyche and translating my experiences for others to see, empathize with and learn from.

I think your comment that she's not masturbating speaks just as many volumes as this image does, though for different reasons...

reubennegron In reply to ArtWithoutPrediction [2013-03-03 17:38:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh my... I'm sorry I missed your comment. Thank you for your thoughts and yes, I agree. I think it's interesting how one's modesty can be twisted as make this a controversial image. We see what we want to see, not what actually IS. That being said, I'm glad I'm able to raise such questions with my work, even if it's unintended.

ArtWithoutPrediction In reply to reubennegron [2013-03-04 03:07:53 +0000 UTC]

No problem! Yeah, but look at all the stuff Dali shoved into his paintings. People LOVE to read into an image and it just so happens, a lot of the unconscious is perverted.

Every time I post abstracts, someone sees dicks. I do not set out to hide dicks in my abstracts...
