Description Aphonopelma moderatum - Rio Grande Gold Tarantula

HOW?: Several alterations accomplished through Photoshop CS, taken under natural sunlight at mid-day. Model was a real, living, and breathing tarantula.

WHY?: I had this idea before I found and joined dA, but never had the cue-ball to work with. I did come across someone else's similar deviation entitled Spider Beight by ~iamblakey . I loved it! And my intention here was just a much different style, angle and outlook to acquire a rather fearsome result of such a disturbing photo.

I don't think so... But maybe it's not a leg, that one in front of it...

Perhaps the pedipalp. It is also a limb, but not a leg.

How on earth did you get the tarantula to perch like that in time to take the picture? They don't seem like the sort of beasts you could train to do tricks!

Very carefully. It was tough.

I have to ask, i know its real- and kudos to you for using a real one (im mega aracnaphobic....i couldn't go near the thing) but how did you get it to stay on the ball??

Did you place it there?

Thanks, i'll be thinking of you whilst i cant get to sleep tonight

revxus In reply to DistortedSmile [2005-09-14 19:20:40 +0000 UTC]

This is one of my tamest pet tarantulas in my collection, it was quite challenging though because the smooth surface of the ball did not provide much grasp for the spider, so the spider ACTUALLY kept sliding down the surface of the ball.

Woah that is so awsome i am totally jealous too i would love to have a spider (although i think my girlfriend would take to sleeping on the couch if it was in my room >_<

Did i mention its awsome? Its clearly getting a fav. Sorry i couldnt offer a useful comment but as if you need one i dont see what you need to improve here its excellent the only thing i would have done which depends on what kind of camera we are talking here but if it was a 35mm i would have used 50asa PANF, or on a digital, cranked the ISO way down to eliminate the grain but this is all personal preference whether you like to use the grain to add character or if you want it dead sharp. In this shot you probably made a wiser decision than i would have because the sharpness of the spider hair against the softness of the ball creates a nice contrast. I would have tried to get it all grainless which probably wouldnt have looked as good. I like rambling, dont you? *shuts up*

Kick-ass shot

I really take in every suggestion that comes my way, and I appreciate it. I actually wanted an overall "soft" feel to the entire photo, and unfortunately such goal could not be achieved. I am rather new with the whole idea of Photo editting (via PS CS) and I rather experiment with my camera to see what looks best. It could have turned out better though, if I was pro and knew what I was doing.

Nah photo editing is not as good as doing it with your camera so your better doing what your doing now and your getting awsome results. id put this on my wall

iamblakey [2005-09-02 04:28:40 +0000 UTC]

Yours looks better quality......... than mine obviously because your camera was far better quality. But personally i dont like it that close up. The clarity is awsome but.

Awsome photo but and good idea..... great minds think alike.

My spider was actually wild and did sort of crawl on the 8ball with a nudge from a stick...... ahahaha i also think my spiders legs look way better arched over the ball!

Thanks for your kind words... very much appreciated. And your piece is also quite a terrifying one, is that a wolf spider, though? Very very neat.

At least yours was featured once! That's an accomplishment. I hope you don't think I am issuing a "challenge" to your deviation, I just wanted to work with this idea in my own way. All of a sudden, I came across yours.

revxus In reply to smashingpumpkins86 [2005-09-01 07:25:17 +0000 UTC]

I think I saw it, but the idea was mine way back before I joined dA, of course, inspired by a tattoo design as seen at a local shop. I think mine is better. And can they say it was a REAL living spider atop a cue-ball?

revxus In reply to revxus [2005-09-01 07:50:54 +0000 UTC]
