Looks exactly like my dog! People think my dog looks like a dingo, though. Great job!

Nice one, but when I click to see the full view I see nothing.

Thanks--it's probably a problem with dA... I have been having trouble full-viewing things on dA quite often lately. If you're interested, you can see a slightly larger version here: [link]

That should work. Thanks for looking!

Pet Portaits!!! God i used to hate doing them. What a fantastic job, even a detailed background. Beautiful work, I didn't know you messed with photo realism. I wish I could show you some of mine, but I trashed the ones I didn't sell years ago. Nice work. Pays the bills, huh? I've definitely been there, about 25 years ago, that is.

Thank you!
I guess I do play around with photorealism a bit... I wasn't really trying for that in this piece, but I guess it happened as an after thought because I was concentrating so much on capturing this dog's expression and the quality of the light in the photo reference I used.

I wish it paid the bills--I'm still relatively new to the world of commissions, and I have a sneaking suspicion that I don't charge enough. I figure I can charge more once I build a name for myself. Right now, it's just extra money I use to buy more art supplies and such.

For God's sake, enjoy being young and relatively not in need of cash. Photorealism was not meant to be an insult to you, Take a good look at my animal portraits sometime!

Really nicely treated, especially where the colors blend on the muzzle.

This came out really, really well! The colors are really vivid, something that can be hard to make when you layer in prismacolor. I'm sure your friend will love it

Oh, she does love it! I put this up as my featured deviation to motivate myself to start the one I've been putting off.

I'm really glad you like it.

Wow, this lays waste to my colored pencil dog portrait. Excellent work!

By the way, what is lyra?

Thanks--I had fun working on it--I'm glad you like it.

Lyra is brand of colored pencil. They make a bunch of different types of colored pencil--the ones I used in this piece were Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor colored pencils (fancy-schmancy name, I know)...

They're vegetable-oil based, so they don't get wax buildup like prismacolors can. The colors are beautiful, but you can't get the level of blending and layering that you can with prismacolors.

And hey, don't you downgrade your dog portrait--it is a beautiful piece! I can tell that dog is quite a character, just from the way you chose to depict him.

Hehe, thank you. I've been wanting to try out oil based color pencils, but I'm too cheap and lazy.

Holy christ! Looks like a photograph. I don't think I'll ever be that good with colored pencils.
