Description Gasping.

Breathe slowly now.
I made the last phone call.
There’s no need to panic.

Breathe, breathe.
I took that step,
grew that spine.
Kicked you out of my heart.
Or so I hope.

He’s breathing in,
his lungs more clear than yours.
He’s your replacement,
but he’s still foreign to me.
I miss the comfort of rage.

Breathing in the smell of ash,
I still smoke our brand;
he smokes something else.
You were dark skinned,
he’s darker.
Brown eyes,
darker brown eyes.
I think I chose him for a reason.
He’s a taller, more beautiful version of you.

She gasps for breath as she laughs;
I’m telling her I literally upgraded.
Yet I think of you home,
waiting alone.
God I know you’re drinking again,
and it kills me, I promise,
that I can’t span that distance that grew between us.

Take a breath between those tears.
I kiss him now and you’re so far away.
Then I look at a little girl with Pacific eyes,
and your world comes crashing back into me.
