Probably Early 1800s

Yep I intended for late Renaissance but perhaps it got a bit too Victorian Β

wow, this is truly stunning, the amount of detail is really impressive! is it partially photobashed as a base or is everything just painted? and just curious, how long did it take? (i canΒ΄t draw environments for shit so always swoon finding something like this*^*)

RhysGriffiths In reply to Roiuky [2015-04-25 09:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I started with a drawing and a value block out, then overlaid some photos and textures before painting some more. It's generally how I approach most of my work. It took about 20-25 hours I would say.
Environments are challenging.. that's why I like them
My advice is.. always start with a drawing. Keep perspective in mind - but don't get tied down to it - draw what looks natural and then overdraw it again later with a perspective grid to make everything accurate (after you've done it for a while you get good enough to draw in perspective without a grid so you can skip the second drawing pass and save some time).
And no.1 most important thing is.. for any artwork.. find reference, and good reference. Without some good references you'll end up making up details from your head and have a painting full of generic details and unrealistic proportions.
Try painting something from another time period, in a country you don't know much about - it's a good exercise. You want to paint a tree in Ancient Rome? You better do some research and find out what an umbrella pine looks like. You want to paint a street? You better find out what their roads looked like. A ship or a boat? More research. But at the end you'll find you have a much more cultured and believable artwork. That doesn't just go for alternative time periods either.. you still need references even for something as simple as a car driving along a beach at night. Apply it to everything you draw or paint.. and when you want to improve some more, start finding references for lighting, colour, mood, the way materials interact with their environment, how cloth hangs off a figure, how someone stands when they're holding something heavy.. everything!

thank you so much for the extensive comment! Very impressive, and I do agree with your way of working, references are key to end up with a realistic yet "flavoured" environment, so much more interesting with say scifi spaceship with arabic architecture inspiration compared to just drawing everything from imagination. Personally IΒ΄ve always been more of an anathomy fan and character/object creation and concepting, but trying to work on my environment skills..usually i only have around 40min or so per image (tried looking at the workflow they present at FZD tutorials and stuff) but it would be fun and try to make something more detailed! again, thank you, and keep up the amazing work!^_^

Gorgeous, but it looks like you forgot to paint out the bottom of the left hand stair railing. There are still rough sketch lines instead of columns. I don't see any rough areas left anywhere else in the painting, so it looks like it's not a stylistic choice but an oversight. ???

RhysGriffiths In reply to AutodidactArtAcademy [2015-04-25 09:04:26 +0000 UTC]

It was intentional - I like to leave a few areas a little unrefined. There are a few other rough areas too if you look more closely.. maybe I should have made them more obvious though! Thanks for pointing that out

Maybe it just stands out more to my eye because it's right in the centerΒ of a lot of very refined bits? (Like the almost photorealistic tabletop reflections. Very sharp contrast.)

Β Β Β Β  I really like how life-like this piece is, how the lighting reflects off of the floor and how the cloths and garments look exquisite. The shading and reflection is simply amazing and being one uncultured to art I can't see anything wrong with it; it's an amazing piece, very life-like.
