Answer at Artist is Note: If you-re using Gimp, you should have 2 layers, one for colors and other for lineart, when you select the "Colors" layer, you can use the "Burning tool" thing, yu choose a Fuzzy point (the bigger you want), with the magic wand you choose the color you wanna add shades and start to burn line by line where you think is better, when you want light, you choose "Light" on the "Burning tool" Properties and you use it for adding light.
I use the bigger Fuzzy tool i found, because it is easier way to the edges looks more "Smooth" and it really makes a shadow.
Well, that is my tip for Shading, hope that helps XP;;
