Description
Chesapeake & Ohio Railway 490 (ALCO, 1926) entered service as an F19 "Pacific" 4-6-2 and was converted to a streamlined L1 "Hudson" 4-6-4 by the C&O Huntington, West Virginia workshop in 1946 in anticipation of the Washington~Cincinnati Chessie limited express. The Chessie never ran, an early victim of the rise in aviation and automobile travel after World War II, but 490 was stored by the C&O until the locomotive was donated to the B&O Railroad Museum.
