Description The small church of St Mary the Less in Durham was established in 1140 and rebuilt in the 13th, 17th and 19th centuries, now serving as the chapel of St John's College of the University of Durham.  One of the locals buried in the church graveyard is Mary Bowes, ancestor of the late Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002), queen consort of King George VI and mother of Queen Elizabeth II.  After St Mary le Bow Church was decommissioned, its congregation was combined with St Mary the Less, so their names are often listen together as one church.
