Description Well here's something that's as big a surprise to me as to you: a new Traveller starship from me! OK, so it's not REALLY new. The design, that is. I created this back in '89 but it's only been a sketchbook doodle 'til now. I figured I'd do it up proper (read: digitally) and submit it to the Traveller Group's "Old Ship is New" challenge.

I figured that the Traveller universe's megacorps wouldn't let themselves be a slave to speed of the Imperial X-Boat network for informational needs. They'd have their own courier network shuttling news and supplies between their interstellar facilities. And that's how this ship's concept was born.

I like this! I've just run it through Ships for Windows and it comes out like so:

(bleah! DA thinks a MT ship schematic is "spam")

I did give it a bigger computer because as I recall, you need Computer model x to jump x (that may be an Edition thing though!)

Using a 100-ton, TL15 hull, the Philippides Class Express Courier mounts an improved jump drive-C, maneuver drive-A, and power plant-C, giving a performance of jump-5 and 1G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports a 5 parsec jump, at 9t per parsec, and one month of operations. Attached to the bridge is a Computer Model/1 std. There is 1 stateroom and no low berths. Installed weaponry includes 1 T3 Hybrid L-S-M. Cargo capacity is 2 tons, plus a one-ton mail vault. The ship has a lift body hull.  MCr 56.

How about some stats? Especially length width & height and maybe some front and side elevations. Pretty ship.

It never got much more detail laid on it beyond fuzzy stats in the back of my head.

I think I SAW this in an old DRAGON magazine someone gave me!  That was YOU?!  You get around, man.

Nope, this piece is new and hasn't been published anywhere but DA. But it's possible you saw some of my work in Dragon. I think I did one or two assignments for them, but mostly my work appeared in GDW's Challenge magazine.

Actually there'd be a plethora of different courier lines aligned along commercial, financial and military lines. Not to mention diplomatic corps and ?????

PAUL! WOW, MAN! Great to see you here, too! It's been a long time since we communicated. I had so much hope for the Albedo RPG

Hey! Write to me at paul@purehubris.com

Great to see you.
albedo ended up torpedoed due to the comicbook artist going to an odd place. ah well. "Lace and Steel" has just been picked up by a new companuy, though. (and I've written novels for the new Gammaworld release, as well as a ton of D&D stuff).
- I'm still getting games books out. Castles andCrusades is a blast!
I'm still out there, a full time novelist and screenwriter. I have some SF stuff I'd LOVE to involve you with!

Ack - such a blast to find you here! Do drop me an email soon!

Looks gorgeous and classic pragmatic Traveller tech.

Is she missing a flightdeck deliberatly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RobCaswell In reply to Colourbrand [2013-01-17 18:58:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes. And no. Cockpit windows are largely superfluous as landings are almost always done by instrument - especially on the worlds a ship like this would visit. So she has a flightdeck - it's just all electronic.

I haven't seen THIS in awhile! Nicely finished up! I certainly agree with your premise-the megas must have their own proprietary X-Boats, and I'm pretty sure they'd have more capability than the IISS snowcones. I always thought this was a great design, and the illo really emphasizes the her clean lines. Did you ever name the class?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

RobCaswell In reply to Thomas-Peters [2013-01-17 00:51:49 +0000 UTC]

BTW, unlike an X-Boat this ship can make landfall. I guess it's sorta like a cross between X-Boat and Type-S.
