Always loved that movie when I was young.  But had watched it recently and realized how improbable it was.  And who would take a goddamn monkey into space with them?

Cool movie.  "Robinson Crusoe on Mars", "THX-1138", "Journey to the Center of the Earth", George Pal's "The Time Machine" and plenty others were staples for me growing up.

This is one of your best works. I noted that the main engine bell at the rear is somewhat different in conception from the flat plate-like affair that is seen in the model art work. I bring it up because I remember a science program about early nuclear space engine static testing in the desert during the late 1950's early 1960's. The footage showed the exact same flat plate with the venting holes, still red hot from the thrust. Even so, the realism and simplicity of the design always thrilled me as to what they were thinking about back then. A super-fast plasma drive that would have pushed us out to Mars in a few months, if not weeks. Judging by your render, and based on the scale of the model kit of 1:144 the M.G.P. 1 would have only been about 51 meters oal. Kind of small for a nuclear powered ship, but if it had constant thrust, that forward cylinder would probably have given them a constant gravity on on of the compartments. Great job!

It really does stand out as a rather unique design, even today.

I often wondered if the crew could have survived in the main body long enough for the rescue ships to arrive. Cmdr. Christopher 'Kit' Draper hinted it had sufficient supplies and life support?

I always wanted to see what this ship actually looked like, back when I saw the film. It whizzed by SO fast on screen.

Nice work. I was a kid and saw that film in the theater. For its time it was far better than most of the other offerings and a good updating of the book. Adam West played the mission commander killed in the crash.
Thanks.

Yeah, in its day it was a pretty neat film. It hasn't aged too well, but I can still admire it within its original context.

uncledon In reply to RobCaswell [2014-01-22 08:44:28 +0000 UTC]

I don't know, I think it has aged a lot better than many others if you keep in mind the time period.
I think one of the best tests would be that while a lot of movies made at that time made an appearance on MST3k. This film didn't.
Still I love seeing work like yours which pays tribute to something from my childhood.
Again my thanks.

glad you got the adam west reference, i think the ship flashing by so fast is what made it so facinating to me, no stately procession like 2001. gems like this piece are one of my favorite things about d.a. thanks again my brother. george

which of the landers is batman riding in? this piece is so wonderful, the movie was my favorite when i was a kid and i was always so bummed that there was no really clear shot of the ship, i drew picture after picture trying to get it right, you would not believe the charge i get out of this one. thank you so much!

I think Batman's in the Batlander.... naturally

It was REALLY unexpected to see someone make a model of this! It flew by so fast on the screen I could never quite figure out its full shape and details, as a kid. Glad you got a charge out of it!

Well it IS dated and I'd say it sits on the borderline of what qualifies as an SF classic, but there's still much to admire in it.

DassKapital [2012-01-20 17:42:35 +0000 UTC]

At least in a 1964 movie the scenario is/was original.

Coming to the modern 'Adventure to Mars' movies of the recent past, there were a whole slew of problems when the ship got hit.

How fuel lines could get punched full of holes like that and the system not notice? *Shakes head*

Ah well....

A nice image, much cheer to you and yours.

Thomas-Peters [2012-01-20 17:00:24 +0000 UTC]

Nice! Good to see a spaceship that isn't white or grey.(I'm reminded that the Nostromo was originally painted grungy yellow, until repainted by Ridley Scott) I remember seeing RCOM in its television premiere, back when TV broadcast of a movie was a big deal, and straining to get a look at the ship as it flashed past. Nice to see a well-composed beauty shot of her! I do wonder about the "fins", which I assume are radiators for the reactor, being painted the same color as the rest of the hull...

RobCaswell In reply to Thomas-Peters [2012-01-20 17:54:51 +0000 UTC]

I wondered about the radiator color, too, but I think that's how they treated it in the movie.
