Description The second in a series I started a few days ago.

"The boy and his dog continued their march through the forest, drinking in all of the rugged beauty of their surroundings. They imagined they were exploring a new world; filled with never before seen creatures and plants. They were the discoverers...they were the champions."

Thanks Dan! I've been having a lot of practice with painting from life and from photo reference without colour picker. Really helps train ones mind about the subtle colour differences and changes. As my teacher would always say, it's all about colour and light relationships.

Yeah, you can never have enough training when it comes to color-relations. Though, I have been pretty lazy in that area lately. In fact, right now I'm having a down-period. Feel a bit stuck in my evolution, and I'm really impatient. I want, and need, to learn more. Also, I'm not really fond of the intuos5 that replaced my intuos3. It really prevents my workflow, because it has a slightly different surface-texture which fucks up my belnding a bit. What tablet did you have now?

Color picker? Ah, I never use that when painting from reference. I know that alot of people do, but I believe that the magic happens in the transition between the reference and the painting and having some info altered/lost/added is what justifies the existence of the piece. I mean, a camera is always gonna do a better and faster job of capturing something realistically than I ever will.

I agree, and I feel you about the need to learn more. Hmm, the Intuos 5 has a different texture? I am using the Intuos 4, and it is a huge upgrade from my previous one (Ulogic or something, haha) I think the I4 and I5 are very similar, so I can't say anything much about the texture, as it is what I am used to; have you tried using a different pen tip? That can alter the texture a good bit, if I am not mistaken.
Yes, the colour picker is beginners; I don't use it at all now, because, as you said, the magic happens from the artist's interpretation of life, not the camera's.

Intuos 4 nad 5 are alike when it comes to the surface-texture. The Intuos 3 had a smoother surface and didn't wear down the nibs as fast. The Intuos 5 is better when it comes to drawing and line-art, because the rougher texture gives you a steadier hand, but it also gets in the way of the smoother belnding. I have tried to use different tips/nibs, but it doesn't change all that much. I'm just trying to get used to it. I think there are special surface-sheets that you can buy to lessen the wear and to make it smoother.

Hmm, perhaps it is just a thing to get used to. I love the rough texture of the Intuos 4, but I guess that is just because I learned how to digitally paint with it.
