Description ACEO size 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils on Champagne Canson Mi-Tientes.

Many thanks to *elegaer for sending me sample colors of Caran d'Ache Pablo, Supracolor Soft and Prismalo colored pencils. The package had a unique neat limited palette that was almost complete, I filled it out using a white Derwent Drawing Pencil for lightening and white details... and the mixing was incredible. I used two greens, a warm yellow, a strong bright bluish violet, a warm reddish brown, mouse gray and ivory black... and notice the beautiful soft blues in the river and parts of the sky, I was able to mix blue from the bluer darker green and the violet together plus get many interesting effects in the greens and foliage just with two greens, yellow and violet. I love the feel of these pencils.

They're soft, blend as well as Prismacolor or Coloursoft, but not quite as soft as either. Very close, third softest of the lot -- and hold a very fine point for detail as easily as Prismacolor Verithin. They are so pigment-rich that they blend fantastic, and I kept getting shimmery effects with the color blending. I love these pencils and absolutely must get at least a small set immediately, and then start surfing eBay for the giant set as soon as I get caught up. They're well worth the price for being the most expensive colored pencils I can find in the USA, and I think they've just become another addiction.

I suppose I could have used all the colors by adding some red flowers, but by the time I finished it was perfect with yellow and white details in the foreground.

Of course it's listed for auction on eBay too: ACEO Mountain View is one of the best colored pencil realism landscapes I've done, and those pencils are incredible.

It's been relisted on eBay and I just edited the link so that it shows the current auction rather than the closed previous auction.

Thank you so much, *elegaer !

Which colored pencils are the best is usually personal, but Pablo are awesome. I have yet to try the Caran d'Ache Luminance but I hear those are spectacular too. Often I'll combine brands too. It's like some other mediums that way. It helps to use the harder ones first and then if you can't add any more, glaze over with softer ones like Pablos or Prismacolors.

One thing I noticed with these was that they blend so well that I'm happier with a small set -- don't have as much driving need to get the full range giant set.

wow. i never thought of that technique, of mixing brands and glazing over w/ softer pencils. great idea.
thanks

It works well for a lot of things. I got the idea from soft pastels but it works great with colored pencils or oil pastels too.

Your landscapes are always amazing. Sometimes it is the work itself. Sometimes it's how something so oft overlooked in the artistic mediums can bring out such a serious subject. No one expects colored pencils of any variety to bring forth such striking art, but time and again you show otherwise.

Now that you're into the ACEO scene (and I know "now" is subjective) you're proving the same thing with small pieces of 'canvas'. Love your stuff Robert. I love your stuff.

Thank you. With colored pencil it's a natural to be able to work small. I can do things with full depth and luster for realism and finish in a reasonable time, the points can be sharpened very fine for small detail, or I can get all impressionist with it and just scale the size of the mark-making instrument to the card.

I am doing a lot more different pieces since I got into ACEOs. But I'm also starting to get intrigued by pastels again and may do some larger pieces later on. I've got several to do for commissions and some ideas that may work better on the mid-size scale with pastels. But working really large is usually beyond me for logistic reasons.

I love doing landscapes. They've become something that never loses interest for me. I'm always learning something new about rendering them in various mediums -- my watercolor ones are getting better lately by a huge leap again, check out the lighthouse I did recently. Some things I loved in paintings in museums are starting to come back to me under my hands. I've forgotten which classic or traditional painters did the originals but the techniques start rolling up out of memory and come together and then I do something that sparks that memory. Works the way someone long dead made it work, and makes me happy.

Sometimes I don't sell those, sometimes it was because I wanted to take it home from the museum and it wasn't mine. lol

And it has a great atmosphere around it ^-^ I missed this atmosphere a little bit the last times...
The effects of the colours are great, I really want to experiment a little bit with my two new brands ...

Thank you! Ooh yes. I love the feel of the Caran d'Ache Pablo pencils. I found out they're oil-based like the Lyra Rembrandts, but they aren't quite as slippery. They have their own texture and it's great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robertsloan2 In reply to BeautifulDesaster [2008-02-15 23:17:20 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Each brand has its own character, and I find that since I started getting multiple sets, that helps me a lot. I use them for slightly different pieces and sometimes together to get different effects. It's my new year's resolution to get all the sets I don't have yet and have a complete master sets collection.

I also noticed maintaining them is easier when I've got multiple sets, because I'm constantly changing which one I use instead of wearing one down till it's nubbins like my Prismacolors always wore down. One good large piece and half my Prismas would be used up.

BeautifulDesaster In reply to robertsloan2 [2008-02-23 19:35:47 +0000 UTC]

Ha, that will become a nice job to get them ...
Because there will be more and more brands with time and so more good ones...

Yes and sometimes each pencil has its own character, what is sometimes very funny.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robertsloan2 In reply to BeautifulDesaster [2008-02-24 19:37:24 +0000 UTC]

Yep. But the more I broaden my collection, the better I get with all of them. Eventually I hope to also get a drafting table. Once I've got that much space to spread out, I might be using several sets at once on some artworks.

The new brands don't come along so fast that I won't be able to catch up though, I don't think. Once I've caught up, then keeping up should be easier.

That's gorgeous! That you were able to get that many colors and shades out of just a small set (plus a white, LOL) is amazing! I am going to get me some of those. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robertsloan2 In reply to EvertoAngelus [2007-12-27 23:41:00 +0000 UTC]

Not even a complete set. These were a handful of sample pencils *elegaer gave me, short stubs and a few extras. I had seven or eight colors total and it still worked -- and that's why I got the 12 color set. If I can do this with 8 colors, having the 12 set expands it a lot farther. Also when I got it, the 12 color set has only one color the same as the ones she sent! Even the black is different. Ivory Black is more transparent and a wonderful darkener. The black that's just marked "Black" is more opaque and a good strong black when I want a black detail.

Thank you! I loved how these pencils handled, they're unique in their feel and I recently found out they're oil based like Lyra Rembrandts. They almost have that same buttery feel, but a little stiffer, definitely more opaque and pigment-rich. Carried me away on imagination. And I actually managed to mix a good blue from a violet and a green, that was incredible.

It`s good, that blurry look is very useful to give the idea of an emotive landscape.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

robertsloan2 In reply to JPCespedes [2007-12-18 05:24:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I think the size contributes to the blurriness, that and the amount of color blending that went into making a very few colors stretch to include colors not in the set. I ordered a 12 color set and to my delight it's got only one of the same colors -- and that one, the Scarlet, is one of the very short stubbies in the sample handful so I'm sure I'll use it up fast. Eventually I will also get the big set of these pencils and probably do some larger pieces.

Out of the whole piece, I really enjoy the mountians in the background. I just love the majesty and grandeur of a single or range of mountain peaks... A timeless testament to natures wonder >.=.>

Plus, in response to your journal, I detect more yellow hues than blue...
But I do like the blue that I do see ^.=.^
