Description "Azarath calls...the child of the Eighth Devil must answer...the Hour of his Rising is at hand!!  ALL HAIL TRIGON!!!!!"

Since I did an upload of Trigon a few weeks back, I decided to upload another villain affiliated with him, Sebastian Blood, AKA Brother Blood!

The Church of Blood's origins came about in the brooding forests of Baltic Europe...In 1202 AD, the ruthless Knights of the Teutonic Order had come to that area to deal with Pagan Lithuania at Poland's request, but soon began carving a bloody swathe across the land, even killing Christians as well.  The Lithuanian pagans fought with grim determination, in order to drive the accursed Crusaders into the sea.  Yet arousing that conflict, a sleeping giant emerged...

The island nation of Zandia, off the coast of Gotland, was a victim of attacks by the Teutonic Knights.  However, at that time, the Venetians also launched the Fourth Crusade against the Byzantine Empire, the Greek speaking remnants of the Roman Empire in Greece and Anatolia.  A selfless Bishop named Sebastian refused to sack the holy city of Constantinople, or supply troops.  In consequence, the Teutonic Knights attacked Zandia.  Yet in the battle, Sebastian had somehow gained the legendary cloak of Christ, worn by the Savior when he left to pray on the Mount of Olives.  Yet in reality, it had been now corrupted by the evils of a more powerful demon than the Devil:  Trigon the Terrible!  Armed with his cloak the bishop slaughtered the enemy knights, bathing in their blood, which gave him tremendous strength and immortality.  The bishop declared himself Brother Blood, and those he saved had became his clergy, and all of Zandia was isolated.

Brother Blood was approached by Trigon himself, who demanded that he and his followers swear allegience to him, to prepare for his rising.  Through the same manipulation, charisma and fiery rhetoric used by the Catholic Church, Brother Blood professed that the Church of Blood was to establish peace and harmony, but in reality, it was meant to conquer the world.  Many in Europe were doubtful of this new religious movement, and the fact that Brother Blood bathed in actual pools of blood.  Then the real kicker came in.  The congregation and clergy of the Church of Blood proceeded to excommunicate and condemn everybody who didn't have faith in Brother Blood.  And then they proceeded to state that the only way to achieve salvation was through the worship and veneration of Brother Blood.  When word of this reached the rest of Christendom, this set off EVERYBODY!  The Pope was livid, the bishops and archbishops of Europe were furious, and it goes without saying that those who were excommunicated or condemned without any say in the matter were a little put out as well.

The Pope then decided to play his trump card, and held a council of Bishops, and unanimously had Brother Blood and the Church of Blood excommunicated, which meant that not only could he be burnt at the stake as a heretic, but more importantly, it meant that he could burn for all eternity in Hell.  And just to trump things up to ensure that everyone saw the Church of Blood as evil, the Pope went so far to call Brother Blood "The Antichrist."  Yet Brother Blood was not immortal.

On the eve of the 14th century, Brother Blood was murdered by his own son, also named Sebastian.  Thus starting 700 years of patricide per century.  Now, Sebastian Blood VIII has taken up the mantle of his ancestors, and became Trigon's representative on Earth.  He planned to fulfil the ambition of Trigon to conquer the world, but was stopped time and again by the Teen Titans, and especially by Trigon's daughter: Raven.

For Brother Blood's look, I wasn't going with his look from the cartoon, for the sole reason that his appearance and backstory in the comics was way more intense and cooler. Though I didn't like the cowl he wore underneath his helmet, so I left it open faced.

Disclaimer:  Brother Blood belongs to DC Comics, Marv Wolfman and George Perez.

I really like the fleshed out backstory you gave the Church of Blood and I do find it interesting that Brother Blood can be very different depending on the version. The first Brother Blood encountered by the Titans in the comics did attempt to take control of Raven's powers, but didn't have a connection to Trigon and merely wanted to extend his Church so that it could become a world power. The Church of Blood wasn't revealed to be based on the worship of Trigon until a teenaged Brother Blood was introduced in the early 2000s. Then after the New 52, Blood was still a pawn of Trigon but had an obsession with the Red and this carried over to DC Rebirth where "Mother Blood" had a connection to the Red as well. Brother Blood is also completely different in the Teen Titans animated series where he is the Headmaster of the H.I.V.E. Academy and has psychic powers. In The Judas Contract animated movie Blood is the leader of H.I.V.E. and is seeking divine dominion over mankind. The Arrowverse version is also very different. So much has been done with this character.

Thanks! I liked what Geoff Johns did by linking the Church of Blood to Trigon, so I felt it was only fitting to continue that connection. Besides, Medieval history is extremely colorful when you really get into it. So that combined with a chance to delve deeper into the Church of Blood’s origins was perfect! I pretty much just add a whole bunch of history based in real events to the DC Universe. Plus, that skull helmet was just so badass!

This is certainly unique. I like how your version looks younger and more youthful than the comic version, and I'm glad you didn't go with the cartoon version (that version just didn't look right.......... or intimidating).

Thanks!! I wanted to stick to the comic version of Brother Blood, in terms of origin and that he's the self-appointed prophet of Trigon. I gave him a really demonic sword because those who carried the mantle of Brother Blood seemed to be warrior monks. Hence why I also gave him armor.

The sword is a nice touch, and the whole warrior monk thing really does fit. Again, this is really good.

Indeed! I also figured that since Zandia is in the Baltic Sea, that Christians and Pagans would be living together, but instead of Islam, it was really Paganism that drove the Crusades to head north. Zandia would've sided with Lithuania, Poland, Denmark and Novgorod against the Teutonic Knights and the Holy Roman Empire (Modern day Germany.)
