Description EDIT: oh man, im so getting in trouble for this

It's true, raptors never intended for us to know what they looked like in real life, otherwise they would have painted images in caves telling us what was the correct way to fingerpaint a raptor

This was something I did based on the recent arguments about deinonychosaurs and dromaeosaurs being depicted with feathers or without feathers. many people are still stuck on the image of dinosaurs being portrayed as fearsome, scaley, bloodthirsty monsters, while others believe that dinosaurs should be depicted with every bit of accuracy, feathers, anatomy, and everything else that constructs the real life image.

Personally i think that the arguments from both sides are a bit too extreme: we cant just jump to feathered, accurate dinosaurs all at once, and we cant just stick to the old timey reptilian monsters we all grew up with. sure Jurassic Park was the first theatrical debut of accurately depicted dinosaurs, but it still needed work and we cant dwell on it forever. and sure the modern day raptor design is nice, still scary, but we cant force everyone to just accept the new design, its like pushing religion on a new country.

For one, i think the old raptor design still needs some work, and the new raptor design is pushing too much towards resembling a bird (if raptors were meant to look 95% like birds, then we might as well just forget they ever hunted larger animals like iguanadonts and ceratopsians, and leave it to the larger carnosaurs... cus birds eat small stuff only)

Soooo aside from that little rant, i made this little piece of satire to get my point across. we'll never know for sure what raptors looked like in real life, so it's up to the human imagination to come up with possible designs for what they were like, that being said, i would appreciate if you guys stop shitting all over other artists if you prefer one more than the other. sure we may come to a point where feathers will be widely accepted, but for the sake of art, cant' we just progress there slowly, so everyone can take some time to adjust to it? please? thanks

btw sorry i made them curse, i guess now you know these guys dont have a G rating

I don't really mind how I draw dinosaurs, whether JP style or scientifically accurate. That's obviously proven if one looks in my gallery.

Hmmm, you know, if I where to be asked "Do you believe dinosaurs had feathers?" my answer will always be the same....

"You see, theirΒ  are so many different kinds of animals under the classification of "dinosaur"Β that it would be a joke to deny classifying something as a dinosaur, and that veriaty includes Β so many of both avian saurian and animals that are nether, so your question is one I could not possibly answer anyway."

yeah any portrayal is fine, we deal with inaccurate depictions of modern animals and humans everyday but we dont hear enough venom spitting like we do hear about raptors and other dinosaurs, so its only fair to let them beΒ

Birds don't eat small stuff only. Eagles kill larger animals quite often (hell there even is a specialist that evolved for that purpose). Therefore you can make them as birdlike as possible and still have them prey on things larger than themselves.

My biggest pet peeve with dino art is that people complain about them not having feathers... can't you let them draw however they want?Β

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to AnArtistNamedFrankie [2014-07-01 04:55:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah i honestly dont mind however anyone wants to draw any dinosaur, everyone is entitled to draw however they want, regardless of accuracy

to be honest, it does bug me a little when a dinosaur is given proportions that don't make sense and they never talk about it, but with feathers i'm open to all sorts of speculation, and in art if it looks nice then i dont mind what they preferΒ

Infernoraptor117 [2013-09-25 20:50:40 +0000 UTC]

What do you mean all raptors are dead? Last I checked weren't modern birds now considered direct descendants of the maniraptors (JK, just giving you crap, LOL)? As for the debate, just cause they had feathers doesn't make them any less kick-a$$. For similar cases of feathered awesome consider the cassowary (basically a modern raptor, Β complete with killing claws) and the fabled ampithere dragons (Quetzalcoatl). As for the raptors themselves. the fact that many had some sort of flight/gliding capability, the killer claws, and freaking VENOM in some cases (sinosauropteryx) along with a warm blooded metabolism and pack hunting tendancies; well, they're too bada$$ for fluffiness to undo.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Infernoraptor117 [2013-09-30 19:02:05 +0000 UTC]

omg when i started reading your comment i thought "aw dammit not another one" hahah its cool

but i get what you mean, im not saying that feathers equal less badass, im sure they were pretty vicious and dangerous to begin with, this whole things is an attack on the artists who try to argue that their favorite type of raptor is like .. the Chuck Norris of dinosaurs, ya know? JP raptor fans are all "feathers look gay, feathers are for pussies, go scaly or go home" and feather raptor fans are all "if you draw raptors without feathers then i will gouge out my fucking brain and have my face raped by 10 rhinos just so i dont have to look at your God awful artwork". but the whole .. taking feathered raptors down a notch thing.. that's just my way of telling everyone to get over it cus they're not freaking death machines, they're just animals as much as an eagle or a tiger is

wait we have proof of a venom spitting sinosauropteryx?? does that mean its not still far fetched to assume that dilophosaurus was a spitter as well?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Infernoraptor117 In reply to RoFlo-Felorez [2013-10-01 17:21:05 +0000 UTC]

No proof of spitting, just proof of having venom. Specifically, the delivery mechanism seems to be similar to the Gila monster

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Infernoraptor117 [2013-10-01 18:27:50 +0000 UTC]

hmm .. interesting .. so we can probably speculate that maybe some dinosaurs also had venom capabilities as well?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Infernoraptor117 In reply to RoFlo-Felorez [2013-10-18 01:44:18 +0000 UTC]

Not as much speculation as you might think. Scientists doing imaging work on the skull of Sinosauropteryx found grooves in it's teeth and cavities in it's uppr jaw almost identical to those of the Gila monster and, presumably, the same as the ancestor of all venomous reptiles/saurians.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RoFlo-Felorez In reply to Infernoraptor117 [2013-10-30 18:12:56 +0000 UTC]

so it is a possibility, would you say that we only need a small amount of proof to speculate the possibilities of something new?

well from what i hear, there's always discoveries of dinosaurs with feather imprints in the rock or the skeletons somewhere, im not entirely sure, i just know they have the proof for it somewhere, and it eventually leads people to think that they were covered in dinofuzz literally from head to toe

yeah sorry about that little comment there, i based that more on the smaller birds that feed on insects and whatnot, i honestly did not consider birds of prey

sometimes i dont understand why people react so harshly to the opposite type of raptor style .. like "scaly raptor artist looking at feathers: this looks stupid" and then "feather raptor artist looking at scales: this should be destroyed and i'd rather be butt-f**cked than live in this world" ... i mean seriously! where's all the venom coming from?

There was actually a relatively study that suggested dromeosaurids may have hunted small prey in a similar fashion to birds of prey: pouncing on it and pinning it to the ground with their hind legs.
