Description Its been ages since I last posted a fully rendered creature design, especially for Constellation Draco, but with this new tablet I got on Cyber Monday and Clip Studio Paint at my disposal... I think we can look forward to some pretty cool stuff in the future c:

Anyway, I've had this design in my folders almost as long as I've thought about the story for Constellation Draco. I knew at some point in the adventures of Acrocanth and Ja'Moa that they would run into a mysterious tribe of 'humanoid' ungulates and it would be relevant to the plot somehow, but I always struggled in getting the look right for such a long time.

The only thing I knew for sure was how to classify them as a species with subgroups and whatnot, much like how you would with other animals (ex: falcons, hawks, eagles, vultures, condors etc) so I imagined this group of 'humanoid' ungulates would essentially make up some of the most recognizable fantasy creatures we know. The smallest of which would be the Jackalopes (they're more animalistic so they wouldnt evolve any tribal social groups), the Satyrs (human-sized goats that spend time walking upright with modified hooves for grasping), the Minotaurs (larger than human sized bovine which can also walk upright but more often will charge on all fours) and the largest of all .. the mighty Chimeras, so large and animalistic that they don't really have any social order, and all other ungulates step aside for fear of being eaten.

The plan I had for these guys was that they'd all be members of the same species, despite the Satyrs and Minotaurs being goats and bovine which are obviously not closely related at all. On Constellation Draco there's some room to rewrite the rules of natural history a little bit, so it wouldnt be too much of a stretch to say that this specialized group of ungulates, though part of the same family, evolved different features that cause them to resemble goats, bulls, and small rabbit/antelope hybrids. When I sat around thinking about how to make sense of these things it suddenly dawned on me that there was a whole list of horned fantasy creatures, and if you think long enough .. one could even say they evolved from the same family tree

Design wise .. the Chimera is not a monster with the head of a lion, the head of a goat, and the head of a dragon... nor is it a lion/goat hybrid with a snake for a tail. I've honestly heard so many versions of what a Chimera is and my God they look like a mess lmao

... I did, however, make it my goal to incorporate elements of those things while staying true to the evolution I established for these things. Being part of an omnivorous group of ungulates, its not hard to assume that they could also lead a predatory lifestyle, and they probably would also be very territorial and aggressive towards other members of its own species. Elements of the lion face were kept to keep its intimidating predatory looks, as well as the mane, which is surprisingly common in more mammals than you'd think. The base of the body is pretty much a giant Ibex, which I thought looked way cooler with those rad horns. The tail is the closest thing to 'serpent' or dragon that we can get with it, cus I didn't wanna go nuts and give it a big swinging tail. On the contrary, some large species of cattle have very thick tails that could resemble dinosaur tails, so that made it easier to give this one the tail that it has.

The feet could use some work but honestly, that's a job for another day

...anyway enjoy

Wow, that is really perfect. I always love it when people come up with more realistic versions of classic monsters. I want to see more of your work

The chimera is in my view a rather difficult beast to adapt into a biologically sound creature design, what with its extreme mish-mash of traits in the original myth. That being said, I do really like how you handled it here, incorporating the bare basics of the original into a believable and very imposing creature

Yeah it was tricky to make it work until I realized I could lump it together with the other horned fantasy creatures and the rest kinda just fell into place c: glad you think so

awesome, i love the 50/50 mix of goat and lion, it's super cool
i can't see much snake/dragon in there but but i guess they are far more subtle than the other 2

the snake/dragon element is mostly the tail, i didnt wanna do a typical bovine tail so i made it slightly thicker at the base so people of the dark ages would confuse it for being a serpent or something like that, part of the design process is to give them something that could also be misconstrued by people living in a world without scientific explanations to make sense of the weird things they see

i was thinking that but then i thought "aren't lion tails already pretty snake like in appearance, wibbly-wobbly and what not, with the bundle of fur looking liek the snakes head" but i can still see what you mean, yours seems to have a reptilian like shape to it, which still fits

again awesome, i love the idea of taking monsters in myth and making them feel somewhat possible to exist, very well done
