We've known each other for a little over nine years and I figured it was about time to draw something for him.

I like this. I bet there's a possibility that you'd rather I not have jumped over everything else and straight to the fanart, but all the other art was pretty dark, and I wasn't in a dark mood, so this was like a sunny piece in a dark Gallery 
But the cool thing is, this is dark too, so it's like some kind of balance or something, to me.

First of all, I apologize for the late reply. I had horrible Internet speed the past few months and I pretty much gave up on dA because I could barely load my messages, let alone check people's galleries. T-T
Anyway, back to your comment. It's funny you said that the rest was dark because I've been thinking it's not dark enough. I had a change to check your gallery now and I see that most of the stuff you draw are not dark like mine. The Inquisitio drawing isn't something I'd normally draw but I had fun and I learned a lot while painting it since I was trying something new. ^^

I glanced at your Gallery again and got the idea that maybe it wasn't that dark, and I was just in a more sunny mood at the time or something... so it wasn't dark enough to merit being called that that way?

Yeah, most of my stuff is more sunny, heh.
It's good you had fun doing this piece as something different and that you learned from something new. I always say that the best way to get better without going to art school is to make sure you are always up for trying something different. That especially goes for any deviants who really always want to make the same thing. You can make the same thing, but do it different ways and learn a lot. Like with your picture here, it's still a dark forest, but it's pretty different from a lot of the other stuff you seem to normally make.

I guess that some drawings are darker than others while others are not dark at all. It's not what I really want to draw but I think that drawing only blood stuff would get boring quickly. Oh well. The Nocturnal drawing is dark, yeah, and sad.
I'm not a very artistic person, never have been, but I wanted to draw anyway and so I did. I've always had troubles with colors and values, but after so much practicing and drawing, I think I finally understand those a bit better. I still don't fully understand them, but oh well, maybe I will one day.

Interesting you said that. I'm not a very artistic person either, and never truly was one. I just like to draw because it allows me to effect lives a little in a way I never could before. I TOTALLY don't understand color values. Obviously. I barely even try, because right now my main focus is still understanding form.

I pretty much started drawing because I sucked at it and I didn't like not being good at something. And then there are artistic people like my sister who only painted a few drawings and she's already better than me. It's sad really. xD
What we can do is keep on practicing. Just because we're not artistic people, it doesn't mean we won't get better at it.

Well, I suppose that besides practice, we can listen to others...; I feel like there's certain kinds of advice or teachings that can resonate best specifically with people who aren't naturals.
I started getting into drawing for a reason a bit like that. I was tired of not having anything I was good at, and art, which I'd done as a kid, was my best shot. I even had good childhood characters I could start with.

Some people draw a lot more I guess. I'm kind of lazy, so there's that, but I'm trying to get back into drawing.
I mostly started drawing because I wanted to draw my favorite anime/manga characters, though if I remember correctly, I used to draw a lot more original stuff.

I never played FFIX, but Vivi's definitely an icon. God you have those digital skills tho :3 And the background is fantastic, it totally suits the subject! Amazing work, quite possibly one of your best yet! ^-^

I haven't even watched the first episode of TG:Root A. I skimmed through the episode to see if they censored the violent scenes, but when I didn't see the 103 broken bones part, I just... cried on the inside. It also seemed to end differently than the managa at that point. I later found out that it doesn't follow the manga, so I'm really upset right now. My sister is depressed because she doesn't really like to read manga, so now she doesn't know what to do since she loved the first season. She may just have to read the manga after all...

Yeah, it was weird to draw a character I don't know either. I find it much easier to find the right poses and backgrounds when I draw characters I know. Thank you, I'm happy to hear that you like it. The background lighting is a bit tricky, so I suggest looking at other such paintings or actual photographs. Believe it or not, I actually improved a lot from just looking at other people's art and trying to figure out how they did it. The effect you get by using a light color as the background and then adding darker and darker shapes as you move towards the foreground. I used to be terrible at painting folds, but after so many years, I believe I finally got the hand of it. I still have a lot to learn though.

It's not exactly that it was a different style, because I used to color it like this from the start, but I didn't understand values before, so the paintings always looked boring and the colors looked off. Only after I painted in grayscale did I finally understand how to properly use colors.

I know him from Mike, since I never played FF IX.
He looks adorable, but from what I've been told, his story is pretty sad.
Also, holy crap, I actually painted this in colors and I got the values right! 
Screwing up the values and the colors was the reason why I didn't dare draw Annie so far.
I won't try to find more excuses, but trust me, I have good reasons for not drawing Annie yet. I just don't wanna do a half-assed job on it.

Reminds me of Chopper from One Piece. I watched it long enough to know his story. It's a pretty sad one.

You know, it kinda reminds me why I'm so scared of drawing other people. Like, friends and stuff. I'm always afraid I'll screw up like I usually do so I'm like "NO. I'LL WAIT UNTIL I'M GOOD ENOUGH SO I CAN DRAW THEM THE PRETTIES FUCKING PORTRAIT"
And then I get impatient because I really wanna draw them something.
And I end up actually making that thing before I'm ready.

Haha! Tell me about it. It took me years before I finally had the courage to draw something for Khaled again. He liked the first drawing I did years ago, but I hated it, and I didn't want to draw something I wasn't happy with again. I think we know best just how well we can draw. There are some things we have an idea about how to draw, but sometimes we just want to master that something before painting something for a friend. There's nothing worse than disappointing a friend.
I am certain that one day you will master the art of drawing girls.

From what I remember, he was always made fun of and was always shunned by his fellow reindeer for looking weird and different. Then at some point I think he found an old doctor who took him in and made him his apprentice or something like that. The doctor became ill eventually and Chopper knew he had to look for some cure to save his life. One day he stole one of the doctor's books and found something about some kind of weird mushroom that he thought would be useful for that miraculous cure he was seeking. So he went through a lot of shit just to get that mushroom and even broke his left horn, and eventually brought it back to the old man. What Chopper didn't know though was that the mushroom was in fact poisonous. The doctor knew that, and just so he won't die because of the poison, he committed suicide (he was going to die anyway because of his disease, but he didn't want to disappoint him). Chopper was after that taken in by some other doctor lady, also very old, who taught him to be a medic. I don't know.. pretty sad story I guess.

That's basically all I wanted to say in one sentence. I'd rather know my work is crappy but it's just work that I do for myself than know that what I draw is usually pretty decent but I can't ever draw anything good for others. XD
