Description This is my first animation ever, so be gentle!
I learned a lot doing this! Like, I can see why so many pixel artists go with as few colors as possible! Still, it was so much fun! Like, seriously, I want to do more.

So, is the tail actually part of her, or is it a magic item that just moves like it is?

RoninDude In reply to Saint23Thomas [2019-03-23 21:10:00 +0000 UTC]

Her tail is just part of her outfit. I wasn't trying to make the tail make sense, I just wanted it to be cute and move in whatever way looks neat. You could say it's magic or possessed if it helps. XD
This was my first animation ever, so I really didn't know what I was doing.

In light of what you just said, and because it amuses me, I going to assume that not only does the tail magically move, but that it intentionally helps the wearer strike dramatic poses.

Sorry to say, but I have no plans to ever offer pixel art as a commission option. I just do it for fun. But who knows!

it took me 12 hours to get this far, and it still isn't really how I want it. But I am a newb at animation, so that's probably part of it. lol

Awe, I just have a lot of practice at art in general, so it wasn't a big leap to make it move. I also spent a lot of time on this short animation. Don't let it get you down!

Eh, I was just joking. I'm more of a writer anyway, art is just a fun little hobby for me.

Wow - excellent work! Especially considering it as your first animation. The delay physics on her hair, belt, fur, earring and loin cloth seem like such a tenth-animation-I've-ever-done thing to include (my first animation was a blinking potato and my second was a blinking egg ). Also, love the shine on her hammer. Thumbs-up, dude.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, it took me a lot of time. I think I spent, like, 12 hours on this, or maybe more, I can't remember, now. But it was a lot of fun, and I would like to do more.

very cool, which software did you use to make the frames?
I've made a few sprite animations myself, but did so in paint.. a very dreary job

RoninDude In reply to Ayakaru [2017-05-22 18:30:07 +0000 UTC]

I made the base sprite in Photoshop, but I used Pyxel edit to animate it. I also want to try Aseprite.

Not bad at all, I love how there is lots of little things that move with the motion (loincloth, earring, hair etc)

The only thing that seems "incorrect" to me is that the highlights on her knees twitch a pixel to the right at the end of the cycle. I mean, it's still better than I could hope to do!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RoninDude In reply to thejimmyjames [2017-04-27 17:35:08 +0000 UTC]

I was trying to show a very slight bit of sideways motion with her knees... I can't just move the outline because that's too much.
I just have to learn how to make it more subtle and stretched out over all the frames...
Thanks for the input!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thejimmyjames In reply to RoninDude [2017-04-27 19:15:07 +0000 UTC]

I understand the predicament. Years ago I designed icons and sometimes it was tough to position things like shadows and highlights. At the time the style was OS X photorealism, so there was a lot of focus on the fidelity of the final product, even if it was only 48x48. You might try an antialiased "in between" tone to soften the motion, implying that the knee has turned and the viewer sees less. It tricks the eye into perceiving a slightly narrower view of the object, as having the single 4-pixel highlight move causes the mind to see that spot as transiting from side to side. Give it a shot, you might see it instantly!

RoninDude In reply to thejimmyjames [2017-04-27 19:54:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the only problem is when you are limiting your color use to only 3-4 tones per color. XD Such is the way of retro pixels... The best way to accomplish this is to make sure that the movement of pixels in the area is continuous through the motion, which I have not done. That's why you can see that little jump at the last frame of her knee moving.
That's one of the challenges of using a retro style of pixel art. Too many colors can be over complicated, so I have been told to use less than 20 total... But then you are limited in how you can create subtle transitions. I'll figure it out, just need to experiment more.
