Sorry about the odds but you are making a difference. Best of luck.
I hope you can save tuxedo boy before anything happens to him!

No, I'm sorry to say, Mr. Bo-Ty, my feral tuxedo, disappeared forever after that last photo session. I sent you a link to his memorial photo. Yes, I have to try even given the odds. These throw-aways deserve better. Most are beautiful animals but have come to distrust humans and are hunted by our many predators (coyotes, bobcats, foxes, pumas, horned owls, harris hawks, etc).

Oh, how I wish to pull out that cactus needles.. I think it's a male too.
And.. if it really is a male, how about Golgotha? ^^ ( I think Bo-Ti/ Bo-Ty is pretty cute and cool too. )

Tuxy was away 43+ hours. Hasn't been in during the day since, just at night. Poor thing! Must be scared to death.

Thank you, Gloria, but I really could do no less. As you know, I'm a total pushover when it comes to animals. Yes, I'm a good animal trainer but I still Have to help animals I come across that are in need. I believe in some sense that they and the care of them are the heart and soul of our planet as well as their husbandry reflecting how evolved we humans are.

We just started a trap, neuter and release program here for our feral cats. So far, we have trapped and released 29 cats. Feed every day at the same time for multiple days and then skip a day. Get a good trap where the cat can stay for a few days if a female and make arrangement for a spay/neuter with a cooperative vet. (We worked with an experienced group that has been doing this for almost 10 years. They use a trap with door on both sides and a one where you can put a divider in the middle. That way you can clean one side of the cage and replace food and water but keeping the cat on the other side during the process.) The afternoon or evening before appt and following one day without feeding, set up the trap with smelly tuna cat food. I suspect you will have yourself a trapped cat in no time. Cover with a thin sheet to keep calm and the cat is ready for surgery the next day.

Trap, neuter, and release here is a death warrant as I have too many predators being I am very rural. There is almost no feral population except for dumped kitties that have managed to survive and they only last so long before coyotes, horned owls, harris hawks, bobcats, or pumas get them. Outdoor only cats here only have a 2-4 year life span at maximum and indoor-outdoor isn't that much longer. I prefer to coax into captivity if possible before trying to trap as they don't respond well after being trapped if you are looking as I am to rehabilitate them. My personal small animal vet is willing to work with me on these kitties. I only find about 1 a year.

Sounds like a very tough area to live in for these cats. Glad you are trying to help out.

RooCat In reply to georgiarose [2010-03-25 12:42:28 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I think you should. Even in town, much less out here, people have had their small to medium dogs snatched right off their leash by coyotes. And we haven't even gotten into the horned owls, harris hawks, bobcats, and out here, even pumas, as well as both black widows and bark scorpions which can kill both dogs and cats. I've seen pumas not 4 mi from my house and I have a bobcat that often visits the west side of my property as I've seen her/him cross the road west of me into the 640 acres at about dusk on more than one occasion. No, ferals don't live long out here so I'm in a race against time to catch Tux. We were doing very well until sometime between 7 pm Tue and Wed afternoon. Tux didn't show up in the middle of the night between 2-4 am as usual nor around 7 am. It was 4 pm before Tux showed up and was extremely twitchy and ran when I came out to put more food in the bowl and Tux hadn't done that since a week ago this last Monday. Tux mostly just cracked an eye to watch me while lounging on top of the adobe bricks but had stopped running although maintaining about an 8-10 ft distance barrier. I suspect that Tux may have been abused before turning feral or was born feral and then chased or harassed by humans. Please keep good thoughts coming our way. Thanks.
