Description "Hah! You just think I'm sleeping. I really have one eye on you all the time!"

Bo-Ty as I've been calling him/her for the white mustache shaped like one is already looking slicker and better fed. I guess I could call him/her Bo-Ty for an either sex name - some form of kitty martial arts, no doubt. Maybe even Butterfly if it is a girl.

All name suggestions welcomed!

Here is the Feral Tuxedo Cat, sex undetermined, but I'm thinking male, that I am trying to capture before a predator gets him/her. You can follow the story in my Scrapbook since most of the photos are not really good quality since I have to take the shots as I can. This is one of the two best one so far. [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

S/he did spend a good portion of Thursday through the weekend on the kitchen patio and in the vicintiy of it and the palo verde tree to the east or further south on top of the adobe brick stack under the African Sumac which is where this photo was taken. Master BK had a screaming growling fit when it came up to the patio door Thursday but has been quiet since then although the Tux hasn't really approached the door since. I did figure out that Tux cannot really see in the door as I have shadescreen instead of regular screening and it's a much heavier weave. Master BK is OK with its presence as long as it stays on the chairs, patio table, and about 3-4 feet away from the door. S/he still won't let me come closer than 10 feet but is less prone to moving off each day. By the behavior and look, I am beginning to think it is a 5-9 month old male. There are a few cactus needles I'd just love to be able to pull out including one near the mouth you can see on his/her left upper lip, one on the shoulder, and one near the tail. I've uploaded more photos to my Scrapbook which shows a cute little white spot on the shoulder which I have linked.

MIA since 26 March Fri 4 am, hasn't come in to eat at all. Something must have spooked him Tue night after he ate at 7pm when it started raining as when the storm passed as he didn't come back during the night for the two meals he usually eats then nor did he show up Wed morning. I didn't see him again until about 4 pm Wed afternoon. After he finished, I went out to give him another handful (about 1/3 c) as he was on his way to the adobe bricks as he usually stops to refuel just after dark when he's finished lounging. Even my walking out the door spooked him and he hightailed it instead of lounging on the bricks. My presence hasn't bothered him since a week ago Monday so something happened because he's never run from me just going out before. Maintained a distance barrier, yes, run, no. He came in twice during the night Thursday and Fri early am. No Thur or Fri daytime appearances. Didn't show up early Sat am at all. I'm worried I lost this one.

He finally showed up some 43+- hours later to eat somewhere between 11pm Sat. and 1:30am Sun. Although I did not see him, his food was gone and there were black and white hairs and paw prints on the glass table. I did see him about 4;15 am as I had left him a double helping of food since he went so long without. Tuxy ate almost all of it. He's still very nervous so something must still be out there hunting him but, for now, I know he's alive and well.

Well, I try to rescue but one of our many predators usually gets them before I can earn their trust enough to capture them. I'm only 1 out of 4 so far so the predators are winning. [link]

Sorry about the odds but you are making a difference. Best of luck.
I hope you can save tuxedo boy before anything happens to him!

No, I'm sorry to say, Mr. Bo-Ty, my feral tuxedo, disappeared forever after that last photo session. I sent you a link to his memorial photo. Yes, I have to try even given the odds. These throw-aways deserve better. Most are beautiful animals but have come to distrust humans and are hunted by our many predators (coyotes, bobcats, foxes, pumas, horned owls, harris hawks, etc).

Oh, how I wish to pull out that cactus needles.. I think it's a male too.
And.. if it really is a male, how about Golgotha? ^^ ( I think Bo-Ti/ Bo-Ty is pretty cute and cool too. )

Me, too! Thanks. A name might be a moot point as I haven't seen him in 36 hours. Tux was quite twitchy nervous Wed and only came in after dark early am on Thur and Fri and hasn't come in to eat since. I fear the worst.

Tuxy finally showed up late Sat night or early Sun am and again about 4 Sun am as well as late Sun night. Doesn't stay except to eat, no daytime lounging, very scared-nervous, haven't seen yet this am. I'm praying for Tuxy's survival through whatever it is that has him/her so upset.

I hadn't thought of that but was awfully thin to be pregnant and not showing it as well as no full teets. Maybe I'll nose around the property if I get a chance and see. I'll keep you updated.

Bo-ti-cat sounds good too.
If it's a girl, it could could have the nickname Bo-ti, the Beau-ty

I seem to alternate between Tux and Bo-Ty but Beau-Ty would be cute, too. Something scared him/her during this last storm Tue as s/he hasn't been hanging out in the yard or on the patio since then and is only coming in to feed after dark so I'm a bit worried about him/her.

Thank you, Gloria, but I really could do no less. As you know, I'm a total pushover when it comes to animals. Yes, I'm a good animal trainer but I still Have to help animals I come across that are in need. I believe in some sense that they and the care of them are the heart and soul of our planet as well as their husbandry reflecting how evolved we humans are.

We just started a trap, neuter and release program here for our feral cats. So far, we have trapped and released 29 cats. Feed every day at the same time for multiple days and then skip a day. Get a good trap where the cat can stay for a few days if a female and make arrangement for a spay/neuter with a cooperative vet. (We worked with an experienced group that has been doing this for almost 10 years. They use a trap with door on both sides and a one where you can put a divider in the middle. That way you can clean one side of the cage and replace food and water but keeping the cat on the other side during the process.) The afternoon or evening before appt and following one day without feeding, set up the trap with smelly tuna cat food. I suspect you will have yourself a trapped cat in no time. Cover with a thin sheet to keep calm and the cat is ready for surgery the next day.

RooCat In reply to georgiarose [2010-03-22 14:29:47 +0000 UTC]

Trap, neuter, and release here is a death warrant as I have too many predators being I am very rural. There is almost no feral population except for dumped kitties that have managed to survive and they only last so long before coyotes, horned owls, harris hawks, bobcats, or pumas get them. Outdoor only cats here only have a 2-4 year life span at maximum and indoor-outdoor isn't that much longer. I prefer to coax into captivity if possible before trying to trap as they don't respond well after being trapped if you are looking as I am to rehabilitate them. My personal small animal vet is willing to work with me on these kitties. I only find about 1 a year.

Sounds like a very tough area to live in for these cats. Glad you are trying to help out.

RooCat In reply to georgiarose [2010-03-24 22:33:14 +0000 UTC]

It is, but it is equally tough on small dogs. East of me are 15,000 acres of national park and west of me is an open section (640 acres) so I'm right in the middle of natural desert with all its predators. I do what I can for our furred friends given the environment.

RooCat In reply to georgiarose [2010-03-25 12:42:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think you should. Even in town, much less out here, people have had their small to medium dogs snatched right off their leash by coyotes. And we haven't even gotten into the horned owls, harris hawks, bobcats, and out here, even pumas, as well as both black widows and bark scorpions which can kill both dogs and cats. I've seen pumas not 4 mi from my house and I have a bobcat that often visits the west side of my property as I've seen her/him cross the road west of me into the 640 acres at about dusk on more than one occasion. No, ferals don't live long out here so I'm in a race against time to catch Tux. We were doing very well until sometime between 7 pm Tue and Wed afternoon. Tux didn't show up in the middle of the night between 2-4 am as usual nor around 7 am. It was 4 pm before Tux showed up and was extremely twitchy and ran when I came out to put more food in the bowl and Tux hadn't done that since a week ago this last Monday. Tux mostly just cracked an eye to watch me while lounging on top of the adobe bricks but had stopped running although maintaining about an 8-10 ft distance barrier. I suspect that Tux may have been abused before turning feral or was born feral and then chased or harassed by humans. Please keep good thoughts coming our way. Thanks.

He did show up somewhere between 10:30pm Sat and 1:30am Sun and ate what was in his bowl. I left a double serving when I saw it was empty and he showed up again about 4:15 am and ate almost all of it. Still really twitchy. I hope he learns he's better off hiding in my yard where there are lights on as most predators don't like coming into the light. There are a lot of places close to the house dark enough to hide him but light enough around them to keep predators at bay. At least that is my hope until I can catch him. Yes, I can't imagine he even hunted during his absence in his alarmed state. The smaller hunter being hunted, no, it can't be a good life.
