Description This is the F-86F Sabre (Canadair CL-13) at the South African Air Force Museum at Air Force Base Ysterplaat in Cape Town, South Africa. Our Air Force assisted the Americans and South Koreans in the Korean war (1950-53) and used both P-51 Mustangs and F-86 Sabres.
The one in the photograph is Sherdanor II, restored from 2004 to 2012 by museum volunteers like myself.

What a nice color scheme for a Sabre! "Sherdanor" is a name or place?

Sherdanor was the name of the wife of the pilot, he flew an F-51 Mustang first, and his said "Sherdanor" on the side. But, when the SAAF was given Sabres in January 1953, he had "Sherdanor II" painted on his one.

This particular aircraft isn't in a scheme it was ever painted in while in service, this is a later model of Sabre built in Canada. It's painted this way because none of the original SAAF Sabres still exist (they were the property of the Americans and they were sent there when the war ended), but the most important part of my country's history involving Sabres needed a representation, so we painted it in these colours to represent this famous aircraft.

You've done a great job in restoring her; is she airworthy?

No, Sherdanor II will never fly again. There are just no parts for this sort of thing.

I thought as much but at least she is there for everyone to enjoy and learn about her history.
