So! They made a movie of Stardust. Um...Michelle Pfeiffer played the witch...The witch is supposed to start out young, and although Michelle is pretty, she's in her early fifties...and she's blonde (they didn't dye her hair), and not exactly tanned but certainly not ivory, and her eyes are blue, and her lips are nowhere near scarlet, and her dress isn't red either, nor does she wear a silver circlet or an ourobouros bracelet...So I have to ask: Why are they making all these clearly described dark-haired characters BLONDE??? Now don't get me me wrong, I don't mind blonde, but when I read a novel and I'm fully engrossed and I've got a clear picture of what the character looks like and those bastards drastically change it, I've got an issue! Not only that, but even Michelle Pfeife's ating was not enough to save that movie! Anyway, I drew the witch as she's supposed to look like. I know Rose McGowan probably can't act as well as Michelle Pfeiffer can, but she can act and at least she looks the part, therefore she's the one who should have played Stardust's witch!

The book's description:

...slim, and dark...

...her eyes were dark.

...tall, handsome woman with black hair and dark eyes and red, red lips.

...scarlet kirtle.

scarlet bracelet...in the shape of a small snake with its tail between its jaws.

...circlet of silver upon her head.

She licked her scarlet lips with a deep red tongue.

...her dress was as scarlet as her lips.

Her red, red lips curved up into a smile of such beauty, such brilliance, such pure and perfect happiness that it would have frozen your blood in your veins to have seen it.

...her raven black hair...

I cried when I saw that movie, not because it was good, but because the magic of the novel was totally lost on screen.... To date nothing that has been brought to screen small or silver can capture the genius of Gaiman...

The colours are so star in contrast to the white skin. Brilliant...

Grrr...I didn't cry, but I spent the whole time yelling at the screen, probably louder than I thought I was. I'm surprised I didn't get kicked out. Just...urgh!!! The story of the book was that Tristran had to realize that Yvaine was not an object, but a human. This symbolizes the journey many young men in our society have to go through in realizing that women are people and not objects. To my knowledge, that kind of story has never been done before in fantasy. But in the movie, it was all about Tristan (note the dropped "r") becoming a man! As if we haven't seen that done a million times before! And yet they marketed the movie as something we'd never seen before!

And thank you very much!

Hey, that bugged me about the movie, too!

What's with the influx of blonde villains? An attempt to disprove a formerly stereotypical image of dark-haired villains?

You know what else bothered me about that movie? They made Tristan's journey last for a mere week. Who can completely change their outlook on life and realize his love of a star in just a week?

Grr. This is how the Witch should have looked. Great work.
