Description I had nothing to do this afternoon, so what's better than go creative, right?

I had this idea of making a map of my music listening habits just recently, after ~at-Kapo linked me a nice, kinda unusual online-radio . One that is highly customizable, and it visually plays your songs along trails. So I figured, why not take this to the next step?

Now, without further ado, I present the:

rotaneco musicmap v1.1
To start, I fist gathered my music charts (top artists and the like) from both my last.fm profile and my Winamp Media Library, collated and sorted the data, and sketched out a quick map. I wanted the most played artists right in the centre (Boards of Canada in my case), and not so popular ones further towards the edge. To get a clear structure I decided to break it into 4 major genres, more or less: Instrumental, Electronic, Pop and Rock, each based in one corner. Of course, it wasn't always 100% clear how to group the artists, so in some cases I went with personal taste.

Next step: Adobe Illustrator. Layouting the beast! And this took by far the longest. After all the "tracks" were layed out and the "stations" labelled, I went to colour it. Each genre got its own base colour so I could easily mix them when a trail didn't belong in just one genre. That's why there is a colourwheel up there in the bottom right rather than the usual caption of a subway map.

Next step: Adobe Photoshop. Importing the map I created in Illustrator and adding all the little details: background, the colourwheel, my logo, and I created my own fictional "tranceport*" company and a short ad text, all to make it look more like an authentic subway map.

And that's it! Enjoy :]

Disclaimer: "Designs & Interfaces > Signage" was the most appropriate category that I could find. The map focuses equally on the idea and on the technical side, that's why it doesn't belong in the "Vexel" gallery IMO. Besides, the most fitting subcat there would be "Vexel > Misc", and that's just not good enough.

Update: Yes! There's now an Infographics gallery on dA!

* and yep, I borrowed Paul Oakenfold's title here.

Oh, we all evolve and expand. This map is pretty old by now, but nothing beats BoC.

This is a brilliant idea!

And now to choose where I want to live... Eels might be the perfect choice. The perfect song for any situation.
Also, I have Radiohead just around the bend and if I feel the need to, I could easily walk cross-countryΒ to Pink Floyd or blur (you've written it lowercase just like I do, nice one!).

However I need to get me a season ticket for the purple line as soon as possible. Uptown John Williams is gorgeous! And I can't wait to visit Outcast and take a hike out to Monkey Island. OMG!!

I only have to beware of the Limp Bizkit slums. Rumor has it, that it's pretty dangerous over there.

Heh, nice walk through the neighbourhood! These days, i'm mostly commuting between BoC Central and the pink lane(s), but they're in desperate need for an extension. I really fear for the Limp Bizkit slums though: You're right about the rumors, the dark blue lane really is in a desolate state; i think there's currently only a bus going through there, sporadically.

Yeah, the city has changed so much in recent years, but the subway hasn't cought up… I really need to make version 2.0 of this map, and soon

AMAZING INFOGRAPHICS. Β Where can one obtain such tutorials for this particular method? I've looked on YouTube, even Google'd... But using lines such as yours, I can't find one.. Please let me know..Β

Thank you.Β

rotane In reply to prl05 [2014-01-27 17:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man! Unfortunately i don't have any tutorials for you. It shouldn't be too hard to recreate these lines though. (I did all this in Adobe Illustrator CS4.)

  • A neat way to start is to first create the buildings blocks (think LEGO), and then copy&paste them as needed: For the 90Β° corners you could take a perfect circle and split it in 4 parts. (Use the Scissors tool [shortcut C] and cut it exactly by clicking its corner points.) Split it in half again for 45Β°. Take 2 of these for "point switches". Straight and diagonal lines should be obvious.
  • The next thing is aligning them properly. (Switching to "View -> Outline" and/or "View -> Smart Guides" makes this really easy.)
  • Finally, don't forget to join those paths together so you don't end up with tiny white gaps. (With the Direct Selection Tool [shortcut A] select the 2 end points and then go to "Object -> Path -> Join".)
And voilΓ , there you have it!

Halo is not an artist/band! Oh, but other video games show up there too, so you're right of course.

But seriously, I never played any of the Halo games, so I also never really got a chance to listen to the music.. Too bad, as I hear it's quite good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FinFihlman In reply to rotane [2011-04-01 21:20:15 +0000 UTC]

You really should, either play the games, or listen to the music. Or best of all? Both. : )

Wandering far:
The games, they might not strike you. You really had to play the Halo 1 (Halo: Combat Evolved, that is.) when it came out for the feel to catch into you.

If you haven't played the games, I don't think you'll enjoy the old, the best ones as much, due to the fact that they are old in graphical, and perhaps game play wise. But the story's still good, in my humble opinion, and I happen to love them still. Nostalgia may have/play a part in that... ; ) Game play wise, the games differ from CoD or BF, like a lot! You might like them, but I think that if it's your first time playing Halo, Reach might be a little bit of gambling... (That's the most recent one.)

YouTube:
I really recommend that you drop by at YouTube (That sounds like it's an actual physical place... : D) and listen to some of the songs there. I recommend that you listen to something from all of them, if you find time for it or have the patience to find the best ones in your opinion.

Overall:
I recommend that you listen to the music.
Don't lose your life for videogames, if you haven't yet. : D But try the games, if you have time. : )
I, too, love Half-Life music and others, but if asked, I would never ever trade Halo away. I think it features all the best from music and little of the bad.

Thanks for reading my text. There might be some typos, but that's just because there is. : )
Have a nice day/evening/night/morning. : D

Thanks for the comment, man, I appreciate it!

This is a very good point that you raised: if you didn't play the games when they came out, it's hard to appreciate them now. One of my favourite games is from 1998 (Unreal ), and it was just SO captivating, both in terms of graphics and music. Now, while the music doesn't age that fast, the graphics look really old by now. So if I recommended the game to you today, you might not find it as enjoyable as I did when it was fresh. Regardless, one can appreciate the music without having played the actual game, so I might in fact try it out. The music of Halo, I mean.

Interesting how you were able to group artists of a certain genre to their own "lines" .

Yeah, it wasn't easy to group them all, and it doesn't always work that well, so I had to override it with personal taste sometimes. Oh well. Thanks!

I see. I figured it would take some time grouping them together. I might have a harder time with my musicmap since some artists span different genres.
