Description I had the privilege of being commissioned by , to do a piece for her friend of her character Oni. Hoping I did her justice! I tried to follow all the reference material, without making her look identical to all the pictures of her I'd already seen. In the past I'd mused over doing fanart of Oni, so this was a fab opportunity for me all the way 'round.

All in all, I'm pleased with how this came out, playing with different lighting, and having the chance to play with textures as well (all the textures I used were pieces of scrapbooking paper I scanned myself, which I find I like a lot more than the stock patterns I usually stumble across online. Neeeed MOAR!)

This took me a really long time to complete, but has been very patient, understanding, and supportive, which I really appreciate. She's obviously a very good person to commission surprise arts for her friend, and I recommend any dealing with her!

I was really blown away when I first saw this! You did a fantastic job with her and I'm really flattered that you've considered doing fanart of her in the past. Her dress is just gorgeous and the subdued colors and vintageish look work so well! I saw the lace details that you commented in Andrea's lj. You should link that here too!

I'm glad you like it! I enjoyed working on it immensely. To be fair, this looks a helluva lot better than anything I could have done in the past XD

Also, I posted a link to the details in the description~

... That's just... I'm staring at it, and I keep noticing more little details in this. I'm still not fully clear on how you did this, but really. Wow. I can see how this would take a long time! I'm sure she'll love it!

After taking a short look around just now, I think I might have to watch your little corner of dA...

That's what I get for commenting while distracted! So, I meant: techniques, layer effects, media used, etc. This might get a bit long.

You mention different lighting, and I can see what you mean; the angle's unusual, but works well! I can recognize some of what you did for the swing's parts, and the pattern of the dress (and textured background) are the scrapbooking paper you mentioned, yes? But I'm not clear on just what layer effects you were using, or how you got a clean scan of the paper... Then of course, there's the fireflies, with a nice soft effect on them. And that's just at a glance.

I love looking at work like this; you're quite talented! And though I don't know the character all that well, I think it fits her quite well. But after staring in awe at it for a bit, sometimes I like to try and figure out how it was made! Though I doubt I'll have the bravery to attempt anything at this level for quite some time.

For lighting I was just playing with using red shadows and cyan highlights on a blue girl. The swing seat was just drawn and colored, the details added in flat back, and the background pieces lightened in opacity a bit. I used the New Fill Layer option to the put the pattern for the dress over the color, then alt+clicking between the two layers in the layers pallette to conform the pattern to the dress shape. I used a flatbed scanner to get the scans of the paper. They're not 100% perfect, but I just moved them around to use the best parts in the picture. The fireflies are just layered color, using wider and lighter, soft brushes at lessening opacities to make them glow. Anything else?

Very late in replying to this... ^.^; No, that'll do! I'm still amazed that you could get decent shapes out of a flatbed scanner, on those pieces, and without adjusting the levels much at all. Still, it worked!

I need momentum now. Urge to experiment, rising...

Thank you so much for accepting my commission and creating such a beautiful character illustration! I love your linework and cel-shading and the subdued color scheme. The scrapbook paper, the curly details on the swing and her ruffled dress are also gorgeous. I really appreciate all your hard work and effort on this, you really achieved a beautiful result.
