Have you ever measured the circumference of a tree?

If you had, I'll bet you took a piece of rope (or, better, a tailor's
measure), wrapped it around the tree, and measured how long that was.

And, to you, that's how big around the tree is.

But what if you were an ant? Then it would be very much larger around.
...All those nooks and crannies that your measurement just folded over
would amount to a lot of surface area. In fact, to an ant, the tree is
rather much wider, even if he were measuring in the same units as you
were.

And what about the mite on the ant? If that fellow were to hop off and
high-tail it around the tree, trailing a little thread along to measure
the circumference of the tree... why, he'd find nooks and crannies that
were totally ignored by the ant. His tree might be so far around that
his children would have to finish the jorney for him.
