Description It started off with a relative regular portrait, but developed into a total different direction.
The quote is slightly adapted, for I have not seen war, but know and have known does who did.

Thanks buddy! Textures are mostly stock, but the lighting took a while to get just right. Enhanced it all a bit in postwork.

Some how I missed this amazing and powerful image,
this is completely different from the usual stuff posted here, and tells many stories,
without a single word needed.
Instant fav

Very nice Rov!  You know I always love a bad ass chick, as if you didn't know. lol  However, that is also laced with the tragedy of war.  I've known many veterans, even those from the vietnam war and you're right...it never stops.

Thanks Mel! I know about your favor for bad ass chicks But this one lost her "bad ass". And that is exactly what happened to a lot of veterans.

BlackTalonArts In reply to Rov65 [2018-12-22 08:38:58 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree.  Although I'm a veteran, I've not seen war and I can't even imagine how different my life (if I survived) would be if I had.

The texture and the model are certainly well selected, but I can't make head or tail of the composition. And the quotation... well, I'm not sure I get it.

Thanks Skycommand. I hope you can explain more about what you think is not right in regards to the composition. Always willing to learn and improve.

But for the quotation ... I think that one speaks for itself!

Skycommand In reply to Rov65 [2018-12-20 11:51:20 +0000 UTC]

The composition gives mixed messages. There is a woman, with a very smooth face that says "definitely not war veteran". (Perhaps law enforcement only, or a new recruit.) Then, the helmet says "have been in war for a long time". The gun too. And the way she is holding a gun. It is not someone who knows what that gun would specifically do.

As for the quote, I don't understand it. I've seen war for five years; I was born in it. Once a bomb (or maybe the aircraft carrying it; hard to be sure) detonated a couple of kilometers away from me. I screamed for several seconds continuously and then cried. Of course, that was a very, very, very, long time ago. I am talking about the last century.

Thanks skycommand for the answer.
As for the mixed message. In a way I see where you are coming from. I chose not to make her face all dirty and bloody as coming out of battle right away. I did initially in the first setup, but chose to go with clean. Why? To make the expression work more towards the meaning of the picture. I wanted her eyes and mouth to tell it all. The agony, the pain, the fear etc. And to be honest ... every soldier is clean every once in a while. See it as a shot before going into the next mission. She being freshed up but her uniform and gun showing the battered signs of mission after mission. As for the gun, she is not holding it. She is hugging it as seeking comfort.

The quote. Whe can debate about it, but it means what it means to me. I'm Dutch and have not been in any war. My dad went through WO2 as a teenage kid. Been through bombardments and having to flee to the country in order to avoid starvation. I also have known some Vietnam Vets, because I worked for the US Military. One of them became a very good friend of mine. Believe me ... they left the war, but the war never left them. It's in their eyes and mind. In their reactions to things, And that is what the quotation stands for.

Alright. I'll take it.

But just know this: It is very easy to tell the difference between a ballet dancer and an air force pilot from their faces, even if both dress in similar suits and ties, wash thoroughly, have no scratches on their faces and wear no makeup. Of course, this was an extreme example.

That's usually the way it works for me too. I get an idea, work on it, and then it becomes something I didn't see coming.

Oh the joy of art!!
