Description Monarch Butterfly - Natura Artis Magistra Zoo Amsterdam - The Netherlands.

I'm not sure if this is an interesting picture, but I loved the colors, especially in the background.
Gah, I adore this lens and the way it blurs the background

One of the prettiest butterfly shots I've seen on this site! The detail/color is amazing! ...look at al the tiny white dots near the head!

That's a really big compliment, thank you :3

Monarchs are, in my opinion, amongst the prettiest butterflies in the world.

I just love their colors.

Yes they are, I agree; but the detail and beauty of this shot is simply amazing! Those white dots look almost painterly. Just a beautiful capture!

Thanks!! I always have problems trying to get a lens to focus that close

The 100mm Macro is a really nifty lens actually. I was pleasantly surprised by it.
I bought it because the 180mm was well out of my price range and I wanted to get some nice close-ups of things, but not necessarily go full macro.
I'm not that big of a bug fan

It does good things for it's price, and it's a nice portrait lens too

I hear many people get multiplyer rings for theirs. They are not very expensive but add magnification

RoyallyCrimson In reply to Pale-Recluse [2012-09-11 18:59:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I heard about those.
But they also reduce by one or more stops, right?

If there's anything I've been struggling with these past photo sessions, it's lack of light

Pale-Recluse In reply to RoyallyCrimson [2012-09-12 03:58:27 +0000 UTC]

Yea it's a sad fact that the more magnification one gets the lower the light one gets. There are many days where I do not bother with my tele since I would either have too much blur due to slow speed or too much grain and I hate grain!

RoyallyCrimson In reply to Pale-Recluse [2012-09-12 08:01:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, grain is really ugly. It can ruin the best photos.

And my hands aren't as steady as they were when I was a young pup so I tend to get motion blur if I'm not real careful.

Well, this lens is really light, so that should help and make things a lot easier

I really like the IS lenses because they solve the shake but they are very heavy and expensive. I hear sony put the IS element in the camera frame vs the lenses making them cheaper and lighter.

RoyallyCrimson In reply to Pale-Recluse [2012-09-14 08:26:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the IS on my 400 is impressive at times, especially how it can handle my "steady hand" after having carried it around all day

But doesn't it make the body heavier then?

Pale-Recluse In reply to RoyallyCrimson [2012-09-14 19:07:04 +0000 UTC]

I think it would, and I think the correction wouldn't be so fine since canon put their further out where the swing would be greater rather than in the body which would be closer to the pivot point.

RoyallyCrimson In reply to Pale-Recluse [2012-09-15 07:04:14 +0000 UTC]

I agree.

There's only one solution;
Canon's just going to have to keep developing their lenses for us oldies, right?

Maybe in a couple of year's time they'll make 800mm lenses with the fraction of the weight and length they are now.
Imagine a 800mm range on a 50mm type lens, that would be awesome

I really wish they had a darklight lens that was better than our eyes. It would be so cool

I live close to Disneyland and there are some rides I would love to take shots of, but they are far too dark and I'm moving far too fast.

- I AM THE MONARCH!!! FEEL THE STING OF THE MONARCH!
- Euh... Monarchs don't sting.

Sorry for that. The main antagonist from The Venture Bros. bears the same name and upons seeing this particular beautifully coloured image, I appreciate his costume even more. But enough about that.

Brilliant picture, once again. So I can fully understand why you adore the lens.
