Description I just thought I'd take a picture of me working on Tommy to give you an idea of how big the drawing is.

I'll post one last WIP today so you can see it better. Then next time you see him he'll be finished, I hope!

my question to you, as an accomplished pencil artist (pronouncing it arteest for this situation), how do you not smudge the pencil working this large? i would imagine it would be near impossible not to lose SOME detail from smudging, but you've proven otherwise. please, do tell!

I keep the areas I'm not working on covered with A4 sheets of clean paper and always have paper under my drawing hand...I go to great pains to make sure I don't touch the paper surface, because it not only smudges but also transfers the oils in my skin to the paper, which really makes a mess when trying to draw on it. I just take the sheets off when I want to show off! Oh and I try to work from top left to bottom right too as I'm right handed. Thanks for your question.

HOLY CRAP!! excuse me while i pick my jaw up off the floor!!!

I can't believe your work! I love the size and I love the way that you have shown pieces of you working on your WIP's. I've been thinking about trying some portrait work and I really like the way you can see your gridding. How do you go about gridding the original picture as well? I"ve never gridded before and I'd like to give it a try!

I'll be watching you!

ok, I was wondering if it was something like that! I'll have to take a look and see if I can find some.

thank you!!

lol!! Thanks very much!

I fix a piece of acetate with a grid on it over my ref picture, I used to make my own, but the grid lines wear off eventually, a few months ago though I found these people [link] so I bought a couple of their printed ones.

and thanks for the watch, much appreciated.

the size of the drawing and the reference picture is amazing...you are detailed and accurate in your rendition!

How do you do the gray in the beard, I have looked at it with envy, because I am no where near able to do that...???

Good work and good working...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to jonas-took [2006-11-03 22:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Jonas!

Hmm the beard, I try to draw the hair in the direction it lies but leave gaps where the grey hairs fall. I then go over it all with a bit more precision, adding a bit of tone to the grey and darkening the other hair, if I feel I need more grey hair or highlights, I use my kneadable eraser, shaped to a point to lift off graphite. I usually then leave it for a while to work on another area of the picture and come back to it later, viewing it with fresh eyes to see if I want to adjust it any more.

I hope that makes sense and will be of some help, I find it hard to explain with just words, without being able to demonstrate what I mean.

my drawing doesn't have the precision yours does so I will start the steps and see what works.

Congratulations! That is truly a large undertaking! Do you use tortillions to blend or just pencil strokes? Also what type of paper do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to sugarplums [2006-11-03 08:06:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Aggie! I use cotton buds/q-tips for blending, but I don't blend everything, the material in the hat and sweater, for instance, are not blended. I use Bristol Board, it's a very smooth paper.

daym its pretty big and darn detailed i have to ask, what are you going to do with the drawing when you are finished?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RTyson In reply to Stapic [2006-11-03 08:02:23 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really going to do anything with it, it's going into a portfolio that I'm building. I plan on taking it to some galleries to see if they would be interested in me having an exhibition.
