Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark running off from Harrenhal, as a sudden spring storm follows them across the shores of the Gods Eye.
This would kinda be like those romance novel cover poses, but THAT book that would probably maim and disembowel story expectations!

I really don't believe he just kidnapped her. I think there was more to it. But from the outside, it would look very much like a kidnapping. But I suspect there's love there.

Me? I think it was an abduction. People have compared Arya to Lyanna from time to time, and given Arya's contemptuous view of marriage, chances are this could indicate that Lyanna wasn't too keen on getting married either. Perhaps she approached Rhaegar and asked him to help her escape and he became smitten with her and decided to take her for himself, claiming he was "helping" her.

I would LOVE to see a prequel series that led up to Game of Thrones and learn more about Rhaegar and Lyanna.
My theory is that while Rhaegar is married to Elia, he is not the father of Rhaneys or Aergon and they are actually his father's children from forcing Elia to have intercourse with him like how he made sexual advances to Joanna Lannister. Heart broken by that and the fact he wanted to fulfill the prophecy of having an heir that will become a great ruler, Rhaegar was at a loss, and in the process Elia starts to go insane and starts acting like Lysa Tully and Cersei combined as Rhaegar was upset with her for not telling him about the children's parentage and the fact Rhaneys and Aergon are Blackfires and he starts growing away from her for not telling him the horrible things his father was doing.
Then Rhaegar meets Lyanna, who has concerns for her future marriage to Robert Baratheon who is unfaithful and she fears she will have a miserable marriage and wanted more. He saw himself in her and when he crowned Lyanna as the queen of love and beauty instead of Elia, Elia starts to become insanely jealous and she started hating Lyanna.Β
As Rhaegar and Lyanna became closer, Elia's sanity starts slipping and one day when the mad king was sending his wife and Rhaegar away but was keeping Elia and her children Elia told Rhaegar he cannot see Lyanna anymore as she is promised to Robert, but then it turned into a fight as Elia called Lyanna a tart, that was when Rhaegar told Elia he wanted to end their marriage and send her back to Dorne with her children as he saw that Elia's mental state was not well after what his father did to her and the fact she is becoming more vicious. As it turned out, Elia sent an assassin to kill Lyanna, which of course Rhaegar stopped, before they knew it Rhaegar and Lyanna ran away, Elia got upset and told everyone Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna, basically saying "If I can't have him, no one can."
That's what I think why the war started and why Rhaegar and Lyanna ran off: Jealousy and to save themselves.
It's pretty much an ongoing theme in Game of Thrones: Cerei jealous of any woman who is younger, more beautiful and associates herself with her sons, Lysa jealous of her sister Catelyn for having Peter's affections and so on.

So, basically, the truth is that Elia Martell doomed the realm and is in one way or another responsible for everything wrong in Westeros right now when she tried to kill Lyanna and told Westeros lies about how Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna?

Thank you, Elia Martell, for dooming us all to a death by White Walker via causing two wars, the deaths of 1/3rds of Westeros' nobility (including the man who had forseen that they would return), and the near-collapse of the realm because of the fact that you believed that if you didn't have Rhaegar, nobody could (and did I forget to mention that Rhaegar was the man who forsaw that they would return).

Because since everyone believes that Rhaegar was an evil rapist that killed Lyanna, what's to say that while everyone says Elia is sweet and kind to her brother's eyes she was possibly vicious and he never knew. Viserys even said Rhaegar wasn't happy in his and Elia's marriage.

I wish they would do a pre-got spin-off on the events leading up to that tourney. It would be interesting to see. If she's anything like Arya, she simply wasn't "kidnapped" by Rhaegar if you know what I mean and I think the love was a short-lived one.

i seriously doubt lyanna would even want to be wife to rhaegar if they even survived after all that's happened. she wa sixteen when she died and i believe she started off as being smitten by rhaegar or something, and then soon realized that this was a mistake and had cost war and bloodshed. it would be great to have that certain perspective from her, not just have the whole rhaegar x lyanna a 'tragic love story'.

Nope, Aegon would be the first in line (if he is alive). There is speculation that Aegon (the son of Elia Martel, the queen) was spirited away before he could be killed, but if he is dead then Jon is the true king.
