Godzilla's a much worse kind of death. He's radioactive death. Godzilla instantly gives you radiation poisoning, cancer, mutates you, deforms you, or vaporizes you with his atomic breath leaving only your shadow, and if that's not bad enough his radioactivity attaches itself to ashes that are airborne, and the wind takes it further away where people will be infected again. Godzilla is a plague that you and me cannot escape, and we created him. We humans brought our own doom.Β

This would be an interesting fight.
However, while I love both characters, I'm not counting Smaug out of a potential win because he has two things Godzilla sadly lacks: speed and maneuverability. He's smaller, faster, and slimmer. His fire breath means that, unlike the Winged Muto, he can attack at a distance and he's smart enough to recognize when Goji's getting ready to fire his atomic fire. Dragon fire in Middle Earth lore is also hot enough to melt the Rings of Power, barring the One Ring, and Godzilla has shown time after time that he's not invincible. If Smaug let loose on how strong he makes his fire, it can potentially get as hot as a volcano and I doubt Goji can withstand that kind of heat directly without getting burned badly.

Well the male Muto was fast too and look what happened to him? Also this Godzilla chills near the earths mantle to get radiation so i'm almost positive he could withstand and heat. In 1954 the "Little Boy" nukes temperature wasΒ 10,830Β° F and Godzilla couldn't be killed by a few of those explosions. Godzilla OP son he wins.

The Muto was much larger than Smaug, though. So that still cuts speed and maneuverability down. The bigger they are, the slower and less agile they are. I have a feeling that the last Hobbit film will treat us to just how agile Smaug is in the air, since all we have is his brief appearance in the first one. The Muto could've avoided the swing of Godzilla's tail if he had both anticipated it and was able to plan. It's hard to know if the kaiju are able to think more than two steps ahead. The Mutos were smart enough to double team the Big Guy but that's the extent of any intellect we've seen.
Smaug is the size of two jumbo jets, is probably a bit more aerodynamic than the male Muto, and is highly intelligent. Godzilla may be hard to knock around but he's not invincible and Smaug's not exact using conventional weapons against him. Getting burned by dragon fire may not kill him (I never said a fight between them would be to the death) but getting burned enough may send him into retreat if severe enough. That's only if he gets injured to the point that he doesn't think to use his atomic fire on Smaug. No beast, Goji included, wants to risk injury needlessly against an opponent. Most times, he's just too stubborn. Godzilla's been killed several times by other monsters and the only time I can think of that humans actually succeeded in killing him was through the Oxygen Destroyer.

I don't know about the Volcano thing, though. G-man's actually displayed immunity to lava. At the end of "Godzilla 1985," he walked directly into one, only to resurface after a long lava-bath in "Godzilla vs Biollante."
It'd definitely be a good fight, but I feel that it would be similar to something like Godzilla vs. Rodan in "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II." The smaller, more agile opponent would have the upper hand for a good while, but ultimately get pummeled and/or hit with a lucky shot of Atomic Breath.

I guess it really depends on things. I'm not entirely sure how intelligent the kaiju actually are but I'm assuming it depends on the film and era they appear in. Smaug might have a better chance than most because he's very highly intelligent.
