Description An entirely digital drawing of David Bowie as The Goblin King from the movie "Labyrinth"

Oh, lordy, this was a lot of work . . . his hair, literally and figuratively, was a pain in the neck But I really like how his leather coat came out
done using PhotoStudio 5.5 and Wacom tablet from an online photo

That is pretty good, but you want an advanced critique, so brace yourself. >_<;

I think you captured the pose pretty well, but not the seriousness of his face of the photograph you copied from. In the actual picture he seems much more stern.
You seem to have went a more impressionistic route. I'm not a big fan of that because if it's not executed well then it seems not as polished or clean.
I think that a little more dramatic lighting, and more saturated colors would help as well.
One more thing, in facing the picture the eye on the right is brown and the eye one the left is lightblue. I learned this when I did a 17"x11" pencil drawing of Bowie and his wife. It's odd thing to have two different colors eyes, and if you didn't know that about him you would say that the drawing I did is off. hmmm, I still need to upload that to my gallery. Anyway, I think it is good, and could be improved with a few tweaks here and there. Nice job

Runewitch In reply to davenevanxaviour [2005-12-29 17:16:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the very considered critique -- I didn't know that about Bowie's eyes and the pic I drew it from didn't really give a good indication of his eye color.
I'm of the opinion that the lighting, with the back lit hair, is dramatic enough and doesn't need enhancement
As for the impressionistic approach . . . I did want people to know that this was a drawing, so I edged strongly away from photorealism, which, in a digital drawing, could lead people to believe I'd just made a copy of the photo.
And I do appreciate constructive criticism, so there was really no need to warn me to brace myself

Well, no one was really giving any good critiques, so I didn't want to sound too harsh or anything. ^_^;

Runewitch In reply to davenevanxaviour [2005-12-29 20:33:43 +0000 UTC]

And I thank you for it again and hopefully I succeeded in showing that I can respond rationally and intelligently to such critiques -- even 'harsh' ones -- so don't ever feel hesitant to offer such.
