Description
Just in time .. the huge door next to the waste bin swung open and a giant marched in. She had to be high school or a little older in a too revealing cheerleader outfit. Her hot pants weren’t that much taller than him.
“Susan! Over here!”
“Is she OK?” yelled skyscraper girl.
“No, we called 911. Grab her pink bag on the bleachers”
Susan, he thought that must be her name, walked over to the bleachers, picked up the fifteen foot tall pink handbag and then walked down the court out of his sight.
Minutes passed. They were talking too quietly and getting closer would be dangerous. Finally, maybe fifteen minutes, the doors nearest him opened and two men in their mid twenties came in with a gurney. A lot of talking and a few minutes later they left with Mari on the gurney. He could see her holding the pink handbag and looking back towards the end of the bleacher and then towards the waste container. He tried to wave, but her eyes never stayed on him.
The doors closed and it was quiet for a minute. Then footsteps from somewhere on the court.
“Let’s try and stay together through the second track.” A pause and then some pop music probably from portable speakers hooked up to someone’s phone. It was probably a dance group instead of cheerleaders. Under different circumstances he probably would have been sweating watching them, but now he was just worried..
Why was taking Tanya so long?
More time passed. He figured at least twenty minutes with them doing two songs three times each. All high energy pop songs, the stuff you'd hear in an aerobics dance class. He saw an opening on the back of the bleachers, but it had a cross piece on the floor that was probably taller than he was - no way he could get the Cobra over it. The garbage blocking the back of the container was too heavy to move and the ground was coated in a thick goop from spilled drinks with some frightening looking bugs that got stuck and died in it. And the smell of old sugary carbonated drinks, stable beer and rotting butter. Getting away from here was the idea, but where and how?
Apart from the footsteps of an approaching giant it was silent. Suddenly one of the giant dancers came into his field of vision turning towards him. She appeared to be looking at the top of the container. Instinctively he pushed himself against the bottom of the container and froze, heart pounding. There was a metallic crash above and then the sound of a can hitting the floor ten feet away.
“Shit! This place’s a dump” came the voice from above.
