Description It’s hard for me to really relate to an African American experience, however I think I can speak from personal experience as a descendant of a Chiang Kaishek resistance supporter who fled mainland China to Taiwan. My grandfather and grandmother are forever an orphan even to their dying day, buried in the US (a country they do not consider theirs), nor did they consider Taiwan (where they raised their 7 kids) to be their new home. My father never went to China, and I do not consider China my home country and I barely know my Taiwanese roots. However, I am realizing how much I have been divorced from my ancestral country, and how important some of those culture still remains with me (knowledge and education in traditional Chinese as opposed to the simplified Chinese, and exposure to the Chinese arts and history).

Even if we are forcibly ripped away from our culture, we have the ability to build a new life, but some things do still carry with us: Camaraderie with those who are similar to us, musical and rhythmic aesthetics and family values. And art (cooking, music, fashion, and the visual arts).... oh art is such a wonderful thing, so long as it is preserved and passed on, so too will memories of the culture associated will pass on.
