As Aria mounted Citi and handed Castella off, she heard her number get called. Shit, I haven't even warmed Citi up, Aria thought. She jogged her mare over to the judge's booth and said that she needed more time. She got the thumbs up and quickly warmed the steel grey mare up. Citi seemed slightly drowsy today, but that soon changed when Aria popped the mare over a few jumps. Aria was planning on breeding the mare again when they got home, so this would likely be Citi's last show for a little while.
After warming up, Aria trotted back over to the show ring where a black horse was going through the course. She caught the tail end of their course before it was their turn to go. Aria quickly glanced over the course again to refresh her memory before going in. Aria pushed Citi into a collected canter. Aria knew that Citi wouldn't have a problem getting over the jumps, she was just worried about her time since the mare seemed slower than usual. She did her best to build momentum as they approached the first jump and barely cleared. Citi, seeming to realize that she needed to move, picked up the pace and hustled to the next jump. Castella's jump is so much smoother than Citi's, Aria thought as she guided the grey to a combination. The mare cleared it with ease. I wonder how high she can actually go, Aria wondered. Now the two were really gaining speed. Aria collected the mare back as they approached a tricky bending line. She pushed the mare to take a longer distance over the second vertical. Citi's back arched beautifully over the jump. "Good girl" Aria muttered as she turned the mare down the last combination. Citi, seeming bored with the jumps at this point, collected and jumped the combination perfectly. Aria glanced at the timer and saw that their time wasn't as good as Castella's. The rider shrugged and praised Citi. The mare dropped her head and snorted as they walked out. Aria dismounted, thanked Ethan for holding Castella, and walked the two mares back to the barn and untacked them.
