Eventually Calvin grew up and didn't need Hobbes anymore.I did this for a battle over at the Satellite Soda forums. The topic was Destroying a Childhood memory. It was either this or SnakeEyes taking off his mask to reveal it was Gilbert Godfrey underneath all along but I don't think Gilbert references are cool anymore.

Wow, this kinda brings up a lot of thoughts. On the one hand, it's sad because the comics are entirely about how Calvin and Hobbes are the best of friends, so to see Hobbes discarded is totally heartbreaking, and I almost want to cry out "NO! NOT POSSIBLE!" On the other hand though, too often we let go of "friends" and our imagination that we had as kids, discarding them when we grow up....guess, that's akin to seeing Hobbes in the trash here. Very good pic, though very heartbreaking.

In all seriousness though, this reminds me of the reason we end up keep ours stuffed toys: to let them continue to be enjoyed and loved by the next generation. For the love of all things holy, keep your stuffed animals! I have a 30-something year old stuffed clown and he is barely damaged. It's older than I am! Let your children enjoy what you no longer need.

Having grown up reading Calvin and Hobbes, and still being a fan of it to this day, I find this image deeply saddening. Growing up has always been bittersweet. Excellently drawn, and a very clever idea.

Honestly, I always figured that Calvin saved Hobbes when he got too "old" for him, and if/when he ever had a kid of his own, he'd have Hobbes be all spiffed up (you know, stitch up any tears, fluff the fuzzy "fur", repair the eyes, put in any lost stuffing, the whole works) and passed down to be the little one's first best friend, a whole new generation to play Calvinball with and build snowmen with and pounce on as a welcome home from school....
But this art just hurts like my heart's been dug out with a rusty spoonΒ Β
