It was cold. The forest looked uninviting and barren, far from what Savfia knew. The cremello’s legs shook from exhaustion, her constant walking and running, trying to find her friend and safety in unfamiliar territory. The trees were bare, and the undergrowth was sparse, the ground littered with wet, thick mulch that felt terrible under hoof. Savfia breathed heavily through her mouth, her nose was clogged and her eyes felt full of water. Her hearing was dulled and she desperately searched for a place to lay down, there was a reoccurring pain in her abdomen that the mare couldn’t explain. Suddenly, her instincts took over and she stopped in her tracks to fall to the ground, ignoring the feel and the sounds of the mulch underneath her. Her breath came in hard gasps and the rest of the forest fell away as instincts led her next actions.
For several painful moments, Savfia went through the motions, the need to push went on for what seemed forever.
“Are you alright?” A soft voice came from behind Savfia. The mare whipped her head around, her eyes wide with fear. It was another mare, pure white with a short, cropped mane and dark brown eyes. Her features were strained in worry, but Savfia did not feel comforted by her presence.
“W-who are you?” Savfia asked her voiced strained through the pain. She tried to get up but failed as another wave of pain swept through her body. She desperately wished that Salem was with her, the fear of being alone brought tears to her eyes.
“My name is Nieva,” The mare responded, pulling Savfia out of her sorrow, “I come alone, I belong to no herd.”
Knowing that Nieva was alone made Savfia feel a little better, but it did nothing for her situation.
“You’re sick, and in labour aren’t you.” It was less of a question and more of an observation. Savfia grunted and glared at Nieva, unimpressed. Nieva nodded and looked away, her ears flicking in thought.
“Stay here, I’ll be right back.” The white mare pivoted and stalked off into the woods without a reply from Savfia.
Savfia groaned and laid her head on the ground, taking in heavy breaths as Nieva walked away, her tail waving irritably. A few moments later, Nieva returned with something in her mouth, bright and green. She walked around Savfia’s form and placed them before her.
“Eat.” Nieva nudged the herbs with her nose. Savfia squinted at the tangy scented bundle and glanced worriedly at Nieva.
“They will give you strength, and help with your sickness.” Nieva supplied, watching Savfia intently. Savfia murmured and swiftly lapped up the herbs. She had barely finished when another wave of pain hit her, and she fell back with a loud groan. Nieva tutted, and moved to stand next to her, pulling her mane and tail out of the way.
“Don’t worry, I’ll stay with you,” Nieva told her. Savfia felt gratitude wash over her body and she murmured a hasty thank you to the strange mare.
