Description
(The following is part of an excerpt from an Overwatch after-action report, recorded by Overwatch agent Cadet Lena Oxton, a.k.a. 'Tracer', following a covert mission which took place a few months after the young agent's first official Overwatch mission during the King's Row Uprising in London. The operation in question was disavowed shortly after it took place, and this after-action report was subsequently highly classified. Because of it, this recounting of it remained hidden away for many years, even after Overwatch's disbanding and dissolution.)
AFTER-ACTION REPORT -- OPERATION "ANTHILL"
AREA OF OPERATION: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA
DATE OF OPERATION: NOVEMBER 17TH, 2069
AGENT REPORTING: LENA OXTON (CALL SIGN: "TRACER")
'The Rogues' was the simplistic name for a group of dissidents in the Johannesburg area that managed to hijack a shipment of military equipment, including several high-yield EMP devices -- leftover hardware that dated back to the Omnic Crisis. Commander Morrison dreaded what damage the Rogues could do with those weapons in their hands -- especially against vulnerable omnic populations in the southern African region -- so he authorized a small squad to infiltrate a compound identified as the place where the weapons were being held. I was one of the agents tapped to be part of the team to make the infiltration, alongside Agents Starcross, Blindside and Mainframe. The commander felt anything larger would risk being discovered by the Rogues before our mission was complete.
Under the virtual guidance of Morrison and Captain Amari, our team made our initial infiltration easily enough. We quickly realized that most of the compound was dedicated to a massive warehouse that held all manner of goods that the dissidents had appropriated. After finding an unattended computer station, Blindside and I kept watch while Mainframe hacked into the Rogues' computer systems, trying to narrow down and locate what we were after.
That was where the problems began to arise. Mainframe suddenly found themself in a virtual battle against someone else within the Rogues' servers, someone very determined to keep us from getting the information we needed. Mainframe tried desperately to get the information, but it was for naught. Our virtual opponent sent a massive surge of power towards our position, blowing out our appropriated computer terminal and subjecting Mainframe to a lethal surge of electricity. They... didn't survive it.
With the compound going on alert and our position compromised, our squad was advised to make a retreat, but we were quickly discovered and chased through the base's corridors by a large number of armed militiamen. In a bid to allow Blindside and Starcross to get away unhindered, I made my own decision to separate from my squadmates and lead our pursuers in a different direction. After a short chase, I retreated inside the warehouse itself, where I attempted to hide amongst the inordinate number of crates and boxes packed all over the place. I was able to play cat-and-mouse with my foes for a while, but I was eventually cornered and surrounded by several soldiers.
Seeing all of their weapons trained on me, I thought I was done for.

Hmm. Been a while since I had an exercise writing anything of length. Felt good to flex those muscles again after so long.
That being said, I didn't write all of this entirely without purpose. Making this render (and writing the story afterwards) has given me the inspiration to write a full blown story based on it, set during Overwatch's heyday and starring everyone's favourite time-jumping Overwatch agent -- as well as some other characters from the Overwatch universe, both canon and those of my own creation. I'm still in the early planning stages, though, so I can't say if anything will come of it. I haven't written something of the scope I'm imagining in quite a long time... at least, nothing I haven't actually seen through to completion.
And of course, if the story actually goes anywhere I might just make another render or two about it... or maybe I will even if it goes nowhere. Either way, stay tuned.
