Yeah, sadly, that news may well be outdated. To be honest, I've really given up hope on the Experience returning to Las Vegas any time soon, because if they were serious about using it to bring popularity back to that mall outside the strip, it would have been finished by now. That news came out 2-3 years back.
As for the "amusement park" idea, it's kind of like how the Harry Potter theme park is basically one small chunk of a much larger park. It's not as cool as the "Experience" having that "history of the future" museum, but at this point I'd give anything to have something more permanent than the touring shows like "Star Trek: The Exhibition."
I remember being in elementary school many years ago, and my class visiting just such a touring exhibit. I no longer remember exactly when or where it was, just that it was a school trip. I do remember, very clearly, some hands-on "treknology demonstrations" and exhibits showing the alien makeup for characters like the Ferengi.
Good job bagging the three Tribbles, especially the working one. Back on the TOS set, the "working" one with the little motor in it would have been called a "hero" Tribble (the "hero" props are the fully functional, costly ones that they use for close-up and action shots). The others were basically furry stuffed bags or cushions, and sometimes they'd put a balloon inside them to allow them to shoot across the floor or do something drastic.
I liked those dressed up actors, as well, not just because they were dressed up but because they were trained to act in an in-universe fashion. My roommate and I were both wearing those pseudo TNG uniform shirts you could buy from the souvenir shop, so while we were there the actors treated us like Starfleet captains on shore leave. It was awesome.
As for the Warp Core Breach... I usually don't like mixed drinks very much but that was one fun way to drink rum. I've heard there are a number of recipes for it that you can find online these days, but I've yet to try making one so I have no idea if they're any good.
And yes, it's a shame they took it down, but I think the Hilton was getting anxious about it and wanted to replace it with something that they thought would make more money. I was very angry to hear about this, because it felt, to me, like they were selling out to the non-geeks and honestly didn't think "Star Trek" was a good business pull.
I am pretty sure they were kicking themselves in the shins when the movie came out the next year and became a smash hit. The Hilton is off the strip, and it's not as big or as fancy as the strip hotels so it's tough for it to compete with them. Anyway, it didn't make my already low opinion of non-geeks (which I got because I remember being persecuted by the other kids for being a Trekkie when I was a child) any better.
