The two took a slow step back from the creature that had been bounding its way up the empty street toward them. Its scaled shined with slime under the streetlamp light, and its eyes seemed to almost flare a bilious green as it looked from one adventurer to the other. The man drew a gun on the thing before it got within 20 meters of them, and the woman just sighed.

"Shame," she lamented quietly, her voice barely breaking through the atypically silent city night. "They're almost cute."

"No," he shook his head slowly. "No they are not."

"I mean, if they weren't so goddamned dangerous, I could see them being pets."

"That's how shit like this starts." He trained his gun on the beast. "Kid finds one in the park and brings it home, and the next thing mom knows, little Billy is Makii Viir shit and 15 of the fuckers are eating her house from the inside out." It did look fairly harmless at a distance, but the knowledge that an entire hive of them was swarming just below the city quicky edged out any compassion that might have flickered for them. The one he had his gun trained on one would have easily came up to his waist, and there wasn't a part of the creature that didn't leave some kind of nasty venom behind on anything it touched. Neither of them relished the idea of fighting the hoard of them, which is why they went with the idea of blowing up the city's underground instead. Sure, it would probably wreak havoc on the city itself, but that was a small price to pay for controlling a leaper infestation. Better to nuke a city than to have the illness spread.
