Hmm I want to comment on the thought that "drawing anime reduces your skills". It's really the other way around. In order to draw good anime you NEED to be a master of the realistic form first. That way you are purposefully exagerating features in order to achieve what you want, and have ultimate control. Sure, if you start to learn drawing by studying anime, then you are fucked, and that's definately not the way to go. If you are aware all the decisions you are making, and understand the real body doesn't look this way, then there is no problem drawing anime. Especially since you are putting your own twist on it, and still shading things semi-realistically...
Beware of drawing too many pictures from nothing but reference, or just focusing on one thing....try creating more drawings from your head with little to no reference....I can speak cuz durring my teen years I did nothing but copy peoples portraits or pictures from comics....it really helped my shading, but that's about it. That's ok if you want to do it as a hobby, but if you want to make money doing art, you will have to be able to come up with your own images and it's better to get started young. I know, I am just now starting to get the hang of drawing from memory....there is so much to learn about the human figure and how it interacts and if you don't understand all of that before doing studies (drawing from reference or real life) then you aren't really learning anything when doing that, just merely copying what you see...
Just my little rant, because you definately have some talent and I would hate to see you end up like me....oh also, don't be lazy, must practice practice practice....my other fault....lazyness
hehe sorry for the rant, take it easy....

Thats just dazzling...The amount of work and detail in the hair alone is worthwhile. That doesn't even look that "Anime", when I think anime-ish I think of the usual stuff...the cartoony naruto, bright colored, hyper active type drawings...This just looks so somber and beautiful. Great job.

I usually avoid anime like the plague, I LOATHE it, it's so overdone, but I read your description and I applaud your openness to trying new ideas! Plus this is extremely well executed for someone that doesn't usually draw anime!
