Description Thunderous clouds filled with smoke, choke the sky above the mountains, heating the frigid air as rivers of fire seeped from the newly cracked crevices in the Earth. Burning both bright and dangerous, the fire flowed orange and red across the grey-coloured flesh of the mountains, like blood flowing from a fresh wound.

An ancient creature of legends rises, hatching from the molten fire, it ascends with ashen wings that already remember the feel of flight. It sours through the phosphorous-thick air, heavy with ash and embers. Until it breaks through the stormy cloudline.

Wisps of dark smoke cling and curl around it, almost reluctant to let go as the bird glides into the endless bright-blue abyss. Cooler winds brush against its ashen plummage, and the Phoenix admires the sight of sunlight burning bright across its fiery feathers, and couldn't help but also observe the Chaotic beauty in the dark, stormy sea of smoke raging below.

Size - A4, Seawhite tan paper
Media - Polychromos pencils ~ and watercolour paints for the background

Meh ~ the description is kind of imagining the rebirth of the Phoenix after it died for whatever reason.

Overall I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, although I should have left more room so I could draw the wings larger, and I was planning to have coloured clouds in the background, but I'm very good at clouds. x'D

I absolutely love the imagery that this description gave me! Great Job!

I really love how you use conflicting colors to emphasize your images. It just always looks so beautiful!

I like how the tail feathers almost look like eyes, but it doesn't seem particularly necessary to me. I mean who would attack a phoenix? ... Actually, maybe a dragon and dragons might fear a hydra because it can also breathe fire and has a lot of heads, so never mind the design works!

Thank you ~ and I'm glad to hear that you like the conflicting colours!

A dragon might if the Phoenix was on it's territory, also it helps to strike fear and awe into the hearts of puny mortals!

Maybe a young dragon would be more cautious, but I'd like to think a mature dragon would still win in that fight (I'm still on Team Dragon), although that would make for a really interesting fight scene...I wish I could draw what I see in my head. x'D

But, everywhere is dragon territory!

Yeah, I self made up Hydras as being the main enemies of Dragons a few years ago... I mean they both have scales, and maybe fire too, so it would be an interesting fight. But I you're right that a mature dragon would probably win. Mostly because they can fly so they could just stay out of the way!

Pretty much.

It would be very interesting ~ I might consider drawing something like that someday (if I ever feel like taking on a large chalenge)

I guess it would be dependant on the size difference between the two. If its a physical brawl, then the Hydra would probably win having multiple jaws to lash out, but a smart dragon would be more stratigical, flying in and out of range whilst attacking. Either way that's food for the imagination.

Sounds good!

True, but the real question is are Hydra scales immune to fire like a dragon's scales are assumed? If not then the dragon wins easy, but if so then the dragon will have to get in close and the Hydra will have a few head to face in every direction so you can't take it by surprise... I think it'd be a tough fight.

That's a good point about the fire immunity~ A fire dragon vs a fire breathing hydra; it's tough to say who might win. We could also consider other elemental dragons to mix it up a bit too

Hmmm, I think that a dragon with a element that could harm the hydra would win, because it would have much more maneuverability. Though ti would also depend on how fire resistant that dragon was...(What would make it more interesting is that technically a hydra can only be killed with fire on its head's stalks.)
I think one of the more interesting smashups would be Ice Dragon vs Hydra. They hydra has enough heads to thaw and attack, but I'm not sure now much it could do otherwise...

That's true, a type advantage would definately help define the victor of that fight. I keep thinking of a poison or acid-spitting dragon up against a hydra, then again its been eons since I last designed a poison themed dragon...

Yeah.
Keep in mind that Hydra blood is poisonous/acid like and it shares a common lines with dragon blood. So the blood wouldn't hurt a dragon, but I'm not sure poison/acid would be very effective against an enemy that already basically has acid in its veins.

I have to admit my knowledge of Hydra is somewhat limited, maybe I should look into them some more, might benefit my dragons some. ^-^

Yeah, it might help.

(Oh, did you draw a Hydreigon because of me mentioning Hydras or was that just a coincidence?)

It was just a coincidence, I had actually finished the Hydreigon drawing when you mentioned it.
