Description I stand in the old stone building,
watching the shelves dissolve into a maze;
their walls a barrier that I need,
All around me I hear whispers,
between books, and paper; and words
I have returned to this old library for solitude and comfort
life has been harsh of late,
so it's back to shelves andΒ Β
ancient papers of olden days,
their flavor's sift beneath my tired eyes
The stories they hold
the secrets they can tell
slip through my consciousness
the bindings; some old some new,
some leather, some hard
they, one and all slide beneath my finger tips
I am alone, it is only me and the old man behind the desk
I do not see the wind banging the old crooked window
I do not hear the rain beating the old shutters
I see and hear only this sacred place
the smell of books, the smell of dust
the smell of corridors long forgotten
I am drunk with the smell of this place
I am dizzy with the prospect of greeting old friends
and making new ones
slowly, carefully I traverse these sacred rows
picking and choosing which books
I will take to my favorite corner in the upper balcony
with the old red velvet chair, and the wooden desk
Upon which sits an elegant reading lamp
the old man will come get me when he is ready to leave for the day
and together we will shut the heavy wooden doors,
walk down the steps,
and part ways in silent companionship

I think AquaStorm4 did a great job at summing up this poem. Your captured the atmosphere of an old library flawlessly. I really enjoyed reading the descriptions and I agree that it is something that is easy to relate to. It flows beautiful. I have nothing bad to say about this writing piece I think it is amazing and I can't wait to read more of your poems.

I really, really love this poem! You capture the atmosphere of an old library flawlessly. I love your descriptions and it's something that everyone can relate too. It also flows beautifully, something I'm like a stickler for in poetry and you made it come alive.
The only thing I might suggest is adding some periods or more capitalization. I got a wee bit confused whether a sentence continued on the next line, or a new one started. Maybe make that a little clearer next time.
But all the wording was fantastic Keep it up!

Thank you for your suggestions. I get a little carried away sometimes when I'm writing and I forget things like punctuation.

You're welcome! And I know what it's like to get caught up in writing I usually leave a lot of unfinished thoughts hanging out there

Apparently you're supposed to critique things if you're in Enlightening-Lit, SO. Here goes. :I

I really love this piece! The wording is quite expressive and really gets its meaning across. I've always wanted to explore an ancient library like this. Sometimes you just need to take a little rest from life. Just you and the books. I just really, really love it. Wonderful imagery. I love how it's not really in traditional format, either.

I really love the part about the old man at the end β™₯ This reminds me of Matilda.

Honestly, the only bad thing I could say about it is the grammar mistake "their flavor's sift". Unnecessary apostrophe use, but don't worry, it happens to everybody. c:

Overall, a wonderful piece! Keep writing!

Yeah, I guess I really couldn't think of much to say...
...do you have many friends?

In a general sense, yes, but when it comes to close personal friends, I have a small handfull that I hang out with.

That's the way it is for me, too. I know the feeling. But I'm always surrounded by jerks who either just shun me or harass me.
