It was a little tough getting the thin lines, but I found that if you scrape the inside of the pumpkin enough and make the wall decently thin (under an inch thick), it's a lot easier to cut. I just used one of those thin serrated pumpkin tools (after drawing the pattern on with a sharpie). I'm sure you could make it work if you tried!
