Baby Swiss makes a fine substitute, honest. I know this 8). I made a batch (read 4 gallons [16 liters]) of French onion soup for the crew here one day and topped it with Baby Swiss which was very hard to find in its own right; apparently people in the Southern US aren't big cheese fans.
