The scorpion took about 3 hrs. of router time (plus wear and tear on bits). To be cost effective, I'd have to charge about $150.00 per piece (Only one taker so far.) If I could make a mold and then do aluminum (or bronze) castings, I might be able to cut the costs greatly.

Thanks, Marcus! My avocado attempts are still at the beginner stage, but I seem to have a knack for the metal work.
Best wishes to you and the family!

Is this what you do? Machining? Here I thought you were just using the CNC for wood and Acrylic not metal. I am so damn jealous cause I have to do all mine with just hand tools. *sniff* *pout*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

savageworlds In reply to AuraKiss [2009-07-06 21:35:52 +0000 UTC]

I use the term 'machining' rather liberally here. Our CNC routers are pretty amazing but they have nowhere near the accuracy of precision milling equipment. As far as metals go, we usually limit them to cutting aluminum (and occasionally a bit of brass). Thicknesses vary from about 1/32" up to 1/2". Most of the aluminum is also just simple cutout shapes. I am fond of 'ushing the envelope' with extensive use of the bevel bits and fine detail work on my own projects, so I've found speeds and other settings to produce the optimum effects. Many of my projects are far too time-consuming for mass production, but I'll gladly leave that challenge to others

AuraKiss In reply to savageworlds [2009-07-07 01:01:52 +0000 UTC]

Most of the time I think mass production sucks..namely cause that's what I have to do. Here I thought you had a CNC router at home. Either way I am still just a tad jealous. Namely cause my muscles and joints pay the price with hand tools.

Work is different, but I don't use any of the engraving or milling equipment. Usually I am stuck with the saws, hydraulic drop hammers and torches.

I would use the saw at work to cut some of my home projects but I don't think it would be as delicate as a 4.0 blade and jewelers saw. Somebody tried to convince me that a drumel would work just as well, not sure about that...
Well thanks for sharing the information.

savageworlds In reply to AuraKiss [2009-07-07 01:35:57 +0000 UTC]

I agree about mass production, if only because my mind is always ready to latch on to a new creative challenge (often in the middle of a previous project. LOL)
Actually I do have my own router, just not yet in operation. Limited space (and the noise level) in my residential neighborhood present problems. If a time arises when my employment with my current company ends, I will probably open a shop to pursue my craft independently. Til then, my employer graciously permits side-work as long as it does not conflict or interfere with day-to-day business.
As one who has worked with both jewelers saws and Dremels, I would invariably choose the saw as a better cutting tool since it affords greater control over the cutting path. On the other hand, the Dremel is a real time saver for carving, sanding, etc.

you did draw it in autoCAD? I draw in autocad myself, but more architectural stuff
I now see that this program can more than I imagined

maybe a dragon would be nice too?

I do have a Kirin, but no dragons as yet. *makes note to start one*
